Phillip will gladly accept Syn’s token, of her sister’s wedding invitation. He receives it with a mix of hope for the future (beyond this quest), and also trepidation for the coming days and weeks. It reminds him of the stakes that are at play... He looks back up to Syn and wishes her well and promises to be back when they have completed their task.
The next morning he wakes and joins the others, with his armour on, and with all his belongings for the journey. As they leave the city proper, and head down towards the canoes he breathes in the scents and smells of the river and the jungle. His big black eyes take in all the sights and he beams his big smile.
When they get to the canoes, he’s delighted by the display of shape-shifting from their guides. And he stares amazed as Aku takes to the sky and speaks into their minds!
Phillip will probably try to get in the opposite canoe to Azaka, just to spread the jungle skills between the two boats. He’s happy to share with anyone.
Phillip is happy to take a normal speed, although he’ll ask the two guides if they recommend taking this stretch of river faster or slower than that, and why... He is keen to watch and learn from the guides as much as he can.
Phillip is happy, for now, to soak it all in, and enjoy the trip... deeper into the jungle he was hatched into.
"Eku, gonna have to side with Azaka on them. It's common courtesy not to bet on people dying while they're still in earshot, no matter what's troubling ye! Don't mean we got to respond in kind though."

On the Azaka reveal,
"Glad ye comfortable showing us yer other form too! Isn't it dreadful hot in the fur? Aye can imagine it's a bit much with the clothes too. And ye said ye didn't know much of Selûne?"
He digs in his bag for a pamphlet. After finding one and offering it to her he will ask,
"Other than Go-tour, anyone else able to change into anything? Aye'm just the handsome dwarf ye see! Also aye got a couple more pamphlets. Eku... Okay aye can hold onto one until ye get some hands again."
Later he will ask the guides, like Phillip, what their opinion on speed is. He has honestly no idea in a jungle and is going to rely heavily on them.
((Evo will hop in with Azaka and chat her up as they float.))
"So, how long ye been blessed as a weretiger? What do people around here think of werecreatures? How long ye been a guide? Any family? What can ye tell us about pterofolk? Is that fruit over there edible? Is it ever winter here? Do we just, ye know, over the side of the canoe or...?"
Alton would advocate for a normal pace as well, but his final decision would also heavily depend on what the guides say/suggest.
He would most likely stay in the boat with Philip, making small conversation during the journey. Mostly looking around in awe at the surrounding area and jungle; asking Philip everything he can about Chult (no need to RP that I figured).
On top of what Evo said, Alton would also ask... “Are all of Prince Jobal’s guides some form of shapeshifter? Or is this just a lucky coincidence?” He adds on to Evo’s questions.
((If the market prices are still the same you posted earlier, he'll just stock up, and then if he comes across any ingredients on their travels, he'll collect and use your proposed crafting rules as he has time.))

3. If needed, Gotur's good at Survival, and Phillip is even better. Not sure how they stack up against the guides.

Evo is far more laid back about his god(dess) than Dornikal. He only brings it up once and then lets people 'follow their own paths'. All can stand in Selune's light, he just wants to let people know and then it is up to them. When, and if, Gotur brings it up he will welcome the questions without expectation.
Assuming that Azaka will take the lead with her boat, Phillip will base himself in the back of the 2nd boat, to cover the rear. He bundles much of his overnight gear into the bottom of the boat in his pack. But he swings his new camouflage, hooded-cloak around his shoulders, making sure his quiver of arrows poke out over his right shoulder.
Happy with his spot, for now, he responds to Evo, “Nope nope nope! No ssshape-sssshi-f-fff-P’ting here! I’m just a handsome Grung! Uh huh, uh huh! Ha ha!....”.
Phillip is happy to chat and pass the time with Alton (and Gotur) in their boat, talking about Chult and the jungle.
Goturwill ask Phillip about any of the wildlife that they encounter, particularly any aquatic creatures along the river as they head up. The big half-orc is sitting nearer the front of the canoe, to pull hard and keep it moving, while Alton and/or Phillip can chip in now and again with steering assistance from the back.

Both of the guides would suggest that the party begins the journey at a normal speed. You all are getting used to the jungle and the heat and there's no sense putting stress on the body this early into the trek without knowing how difficult it is.
Evo, I think with that roll you have some pretty extensive knowledge on Couatls.
Couatls are benevolent serpentine beings of great intellect and insight. Their brilliantly colored wings and gentle manner speak to their celestial origins.
Couatls were created as guardians and caretakers by a benevolent god not worshiped since the dawn of time, and which is forgotten now by all but the couatls themselves.
A couatl can’t lie, but it can withhold information, answer questions vaguely, or allow others to jump to the wrong conclusions if doing so is necessary to protect something, to keep promises, or to hide the secret of its existence.
A couatl can live for ages without sustenance, even surviving without air, but these creatures can die of disease or the passage of time. A couatl can sense its end up to a century beforehand, but it has no insight into the manner of its demise.
Azaka says to Evo"Indeed it is hot, although I'm used to it. The majority of my time in the jungle has been in tiger, and am looking forward to enjoying our paddle here and seeing the jungle with my human eyes. Yes, I am an optimist, cleric of Selûne."
"Of Selûne I know little. Most of the lyc's like me around here are the same way. We've a general understanding that she controls the lay of things with the good lyc's. And the moon, I tell you she can be quite the inconvenience at times! Let me take a look at that pamphlet perhaps during camp."
"I've been like this for longer than I can remember. Sometimes I'll spend weeks, months at a time in tiger form. Easier sometimes than dealing with people. Depends on who you talk to, I suppose. Some folks can't stand us. Although most of 'em don't even know it half the time. I've been a guide for years, although I'll take time off here and there when I grow tired. Or when the customer dies." she laughs. "Family.. no. Except the mask. It's an heirloom, the only one remaining. This is why my quest is so important to me." that's all she gives you about her family, and she jokingly asks someone else in the other canoe if they want to switch given all of Evo's questions and them smiles at Evo. "Let's just enjoy the scenery. It's your first time here after all, yes? Not to worry, I will let you know should we need to act. Believe me."
Alton, she would responded to you "haha, no. Not all of us. You got the best ones though." and she smiles at you.
Gotur, the guards pretend like they didn't hear you and start to walk faster away. You have a good understanding of weretigers, most of the stuff on that stat block as well as lycanthropy in general. No idea about couatls!
The next post will have a visual of the canoes and who is in each one and the river (likely on the google sheet somewhere) as well as all of the rolls and info/stuff about the next steps! I will explain about the survival check and all of that (some of you have higher survival than the guides) but I will make it all make sense. It wouldn't make sense for the guide to let someone navigate, and it's going to be impossible to 'get lost' when on a river, because that would be just silly. I will explain all in next post! ASAP
I have added the canoes and all of your icons taking into consideration where you wanted to be placed. Let me know if it is ok. There are no specific checks to make on this map, it's more to show you how the canoes are set up. If an encounter happens on the river, it might be on this map, or on a different map.
You can see Eku is flying overhead about 30 feet and off to the east a bit, communicating telepathically to all of you if need be and keeping that line of communication open during the travel down the river.
Ok, let's start day 1! And please feel free to RP any conversations between characters as you travel together as you see fit.
1. Direction = south down the river.
2. Speed = normal
3. Navigator = in this case and likely all the way down this river until we get to Firefinger - I am going to skip the navigator survival check. Azaka knows where to go, and it's not like you're going to get lost on this river. It's either one direction or the other. Once we get out of the canoes and into the jungle, especially in locations we don't know about, then this step will become more important. This might also be a reason to stay in the canoes. Getting lost in the jungle seems to suck in this game, which may or may not happen.
4. DM Check (first half of travel): 8
DM Check (second half of travel): 6
((the number of these checks will change at my discretion. Some days there will be no checks. Some days there will be more than 2. Sometimes there will be nighttime ones instead of daytime travel ones.))
It is a peaceful 8 hours of paddling! You guys can RP as you see fit. I will try and give as much back as I get if you decide to talk to the guides.
You make it 2 hexes down the river. I have updated the Chult map with the new marker location. You will also have no problems or encounters when you stop to camp for the night, and then after any RP you want to do, we continue day #2 with the same(ish) steps.
Again feel free to RP the camping, the evening, the paddling, or none of it. I am good either way!
That's basically how this works! And then of course all of the locations mixed in as we get to them.
Azaka would've eventually told Evo about them, for sure. It was a long day :)
She would've told him that Pterafolk are 10-foot-tall, winged, reptilian bipeds native to Chult.
She mentions that in Chultan culture, pterafolk are often referred to as “terror folk” for their habit of swooping down from the sky to snatch whatever and whomever they can, then transporting treasure and food back to their roosts.
Azaka believes that it is the pterafolk that have taken her family heirloom. Firefinger has been taken over by a flock of pterafolk and she believes her heirloom is there.
She will have a specific strategy that she will go over when the party gets closer to Firefinger and will give more info about these beasts and how you should approach at that point.
I think Azaka would know most of the info on the pterafolk stat block and would tell you all about it!
Just don't memorize the HP and AC if you don't already know it, hahaha!
((Phillip was going to take whichever one Azaka didn't hop in, to spread out jungle knowledge.))
"Phillip, sounds like you and Alton should take cover behind me if the pterafolk come a hunting! Azaka, you think they're strong enough fliers to carry me off?", Gotur asks, slapping his substantial girth.

Phillip smiles at Gotur’s joke. “Maybe it’s the P’terro F-fffff-P’olk... that should be the ones taking cover... I ffff-think! Ha? Uh huh? Ha!....”. He gives the half-orc a wink.
After about an hour in the canoes, Phillip starts to look more at ease than he did in the city. Although it’s hard to put a finger on anything in particular, he seems more sure-footed, more relaxed and more confident...
Ranger class features...
((OOC: Some of Phillip’s ranger features kick in, after spending an hour in his ‘favoured terrain’.
@Klein, at some point I’ll DM you and go through Phillip’s Ranger class features and his Background feature, to check how you want to play them in this campaign and make sure none of them are too OP)).
On a calm stretch of the river, where it gets a little wider, Phillip suddenly looks over the side of the canoe, looking like he’s trying to track something he’s seen under the surface.
Wearing his leathers, and just holding a dagger, he says, “I won’t be a second! Uh huh, uh huh.....”, and slips silently over the edge of the canoe and disappears under the water...
Moments later, he breaks the surface again, with a huge smile on his face, holding up two river-creatures that look something like small lobsters, only vivid purple in colour. “A treat fff-for later!! Yup yup yup!....”, he announces triumphantly.
If he can, Phillip will spend the next half-an-hour or so, swimming happily, and foraging for more river creatures, along with a few handfuls of green roots and leaves.
Foraging traits...
((Phillip has a couple of traits that support foraging for food and water.
@Klein, we can go through all Phillip’s traits and you can let me know how you like to play them in-game))
((Sorry for all the Phillip posts!! Just want to get a few things out relevant to the first day and first night before I go to bed! lol))
When the party stops to camp for the night, Phillip will help set up. He’s very keen to see ‘Mister E’vo’s Big Tent’ for the night, and will buzz around him excitedly while he sets everything up, helping if he can.
Before that though, and before settling down properly for bed, he’ll find a quiet space at the side of the camp, take out his decanter of endless water, and using shape water, he’ll create an impossible, wobbly, sphere of water, about as big as he is, resting on the ground. Then he steps through its rippling surface and into the water, sits down inside cross-legged, and meditates (and re-hydrates) for an hour, in his little watery sanctuary.
