In the Candlekeep Mysteries adventure, the stat block for wereravens is reprinted. A major change, however, is the complete removal of their previous damage immunites that were included in the wereraven stat block in Curse of Strahd. It seems the D&DBeyond stat block also updated the stat block in Curse of Strahd to reflect the change. If this change was deliberate, why was it made?
All other lycanthropes retain their damage immunities, so it can't be a question of balancing player strength if they contract lycanthrope since there are much more powerful variants, and it just doesn't make sense lore-wise. Was this change an error?
Wereravens are the only werecritters with no default Alignment and the only ones tagged as NPCs. The text strongly implies they are Lawful Good but does not come out and say so. They come from a Horror setting, and my best guess would be that the change was deliberate, and meant to give them more a connection to vampires and evil curses.
They seem to have replaced immunity with Regeneration. It doesn't make much sense to me in the context of all the other Lycanthropes but the addition of the Regeneration ability would tend to indicate the change was intentional for some reason.
I see a lot of threads from people who want to play weres. Indeed, many people seem to feel that were-characters are not powerful enough as is and needs serous buffs. My guess is that characters were never really intended to remain cursed. There could be some interesting roleplaying from when the character learns of the curse until they can get it cured, but it should be all over and done with quickly. Damage Immunities are far too powerful for player characters. They should be fighting the curse, and if they aren't trying to get cured, they aren't really fighting the curse.
Still, the desire to sell more Ravenloft products is there, and possibly the desire to give players something they have been asking for factors in there somewhere. Wereravens could be a test to see what happens if players are encouraged to have weres as characters. The rest of the weres can follow. It won't take much to change the stat blocks.

Following with interest.
I'd much rather keep the "classic" version with immunities than a high regeneration.

But at the same time they share the horror setting with other lycanthropes, like classic werewolves, and they remain unchanged...
