It started playing Dungeons and Dragons in 1979 in high school. I played with the basic rules. Occasionally we would use advanced basic rules at the time only went to levels 1 through 3 so when we went over that we had to use advanced.
The experts at came out I think at 1980 so I upgraded and bought new books third time I bought that first one. So I have a basic rule book that is red and an expert rulebook that's blue both of them say first printing January 1981. And that's what I use up until the early 2000s when I quit playing Dungeons & Dragons so now I'm learning to replay with 5th edition
Looks like I found all the free rule downloads. I should be okay my two new roommates are in their early twenties and found out I used to play Dungeons & Dragons that's why I don't know all this stuff out. They want me to learn 5th edition they don't want to learn first and then they want me to pay the dungeon master because neither of them have played before. I'm thinking of running LMoP.

Hi Randy, welcome. Same boat. Started with AD&D in the 80s and then hadn't played until a year and a half ago. First, you can go part of the way with the complimentary source material here, but my advice is invest in the basic digital books like DMs guide and players handbook on DDB. The integration with character sheets, cross referenced and search is awesome. Lost Mines is a really fun adventure even for experienced players. In my opinion its not as easy to DM and do it justice as some people say. Its not that its hard, i just don't think its that much easier than other published adventures.
You can start with a couple of casual one-shots to get the hang of it as Level 0 or just for fun before you start Phandalin. Have fun!
I found a paper battle map somebody gave me 0f the kingsroad it looks like it'll be the perfect size for the first encounter Goblin arrows. I made about a half-dozen scattered train pieces of Thicket bushes that turned out really nice. I started making the scattered Cliff pieces and a few trees I should be ready for the first encounter in a few days

Welcome back to D&D! I also started with the red and blue boxed sets in the 80's. We use 5th edition now and the fun just keeps on going.
I never played older editions (I had 1 session of pathfinder in college).
Do you have any questions about 5e?

LMoP is a good first adventure for a new group (or so I hear, I haven't played that one).
Welcome back!
We need more "old timers" here.
I'm tired of dealing with the whippersnappers by myself. :)
