Might be a stupid question but is there any way to heal from dealing necrotic damage? I seem to recall seeing something that did but cant find it again if it exists. I know there are some spells that deal necrotic and allow you to heal from that but what I'm ideally looking for is something that allows me to heal from all forms of necrotic damage I deal even if just basic attacks
While a reduction in max HP or healing is often associated with necrotic damage, it is not an inherent trait of the damage. Poison damage doesn't poison you unless it says otherwise, fire damage doesn't burn, etc. If something says it's necrotic damage, that's only informing you for the purposes of vulnerabilities, resistances and immunities. There is nothing else to take away from that tag.
Now, often spells and effects that cause necrotic damage do also prevent healing etc. If (and only if) this is the case, this will be detailed in the description of the spell/effect/etc. It will also tell you how it can be cured (if it requires a short rest, long rest, drinking an antidote, etc). If it doesn't mention these details, then the damage is no different than any other type apart from what vulnerabilities, resistances and immunities apply.
Since you're asking the question, the likelihood is that there are no special requirements for healing the wound caused in that instance.

ok thanks for responses and I do understand those aspects of it but to clarify what I mean is spells like vampiric touch have this effect "On a hit, the target takes 3d6 necrotic damage, and you regain hit points equal to half the amount of necrotic damage dealt.". So rather than trying to heal myself having TAKEN necrotic damage I'm wondering if there is a way to heal myself when DEALING necrotic damage to a creature. Kind of picturing it like siphoning health off of them on a hit with necro damage to heal myself as the fight goes on.

The way to heal yourself from dealing necrotic damage is through spells and abilities like necrotic touch. There are no general rules for that, it's all related to specific abilities.
The same principles apply. Thee is nothing particularly special about necrotic damage, other than which creatures are vulnerable, resistant and immune to it. The ability to heal from inflicting damage is a property of the spell/effect/etc, not the damage type. You could replace the words with colours or describemthem as "rock, paper, scissors, it doesn't matter - it's just an organising system. They don't get special powers pe se (even ifntheure generally associated with certain effects). If the spell doesn't say that you heal when you use it, then you don't heal. If you used an ability to change vampiric touch from necrotic damage to, say, cold damage (not sure if that is possible, but we'll run with it to illustrate), it would still heal you because it's not the necrotic part that was healing you.
If you want to heal, you have to find a spell(/ability/etc) that does.it. There is a correlation between the two because creatures.that leech your life also tend to deal necrotic damage, but it's not a function of necrotic damage per se.
What do you want to know for? Perhaps if we know why you want to know (eg are you trying to create a spell? Just understand how the mechanics works? Etc), then we can help point you in the right direction.

My current character is an Undead warlock who's more or less obsessed with keeping himself alive at all costs so experiments in the art of necromancy and I thought it would be a cool idea if he could leech life from others from the necrotic damage he deals so I was just wondering if there was anything like that in place already but if, as it seems, that is not the case I can discuss something with DM instead.

There are only a few features and spells that do this. And that is because it is a very strong ability and allowing it do be done from a regular attack can very easily become game breaking.
At 2nd level, you gain the ability to reap life energy from creatures you kill with your spells. Once per turn when you kill one or more creatures with a spell of 1st level or higher, you regain hit points equal to twice the spell’s level, or three times its level if the spell belongs to the School of Necromancy. You don’t gain this benefit for killing constructs or undead.
Necromancy subclass for Wizard.
It isn't necrotic damage specific, but accomplishes what you're aiming for. Especially with the 'if necromancy school more heals' part.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
Has anyone found that the only way to heal necrotic damage is to rest. That healing spells dont work? A DM dropped that on me the other day. Took out half my HP in one attack and said I could not heal it with a spell only sleep. I was like ok peace out I am out of here and left the engagement.

Could use clarification. If they're saying all necrotic damage works that way, absolutely just a house rule (and a terrible one at that). But there are monsters that can drain your Max HP with attacks (often with necrotic damage) and only a long rest fixes it.

Necrotic damage does not have any special rules and you can heal from it normally like any other damage.
There are some spells that prohibit regaining hit points for a fixed duration, but that's not a general rule of necrotic damage.

I'm probably laughing.

Definitely a House rule that one.
