I just have a quick question regarding attacks by monsters that have the "and the target is grappled (escape DCxx)" ability.
If a creature hits with an attack that grapples, does the target make a saving throw there and then to see if the grapple takes affect, or is the target automatically grappled on a hit?
I get that the escape DC is used on the targets turn to escape the grapple if they use their action to do so.
For example, a Chuul that attacks with it's pincer and hits will grapple a target. Is the PC auto grappled or do they make a save to see if it grapples them?
The condition to watch out for is restrained. Some monsters just say the target is grappled which reduces their speed to zero but otherwise has no effect on their ability to attack or take other actions. All grappled really does is prevent a creature from moving away.
However, quite a number also have " Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained." The restrained condition grants advantage on attacks to hit the restrained creature and the restrained creature has disadvantage on attacks they make. It is a much bigger problem. :)

The target is automatically grappled.
Thanks, I thought so, which completely irritated my tank fighter and barbarian against 3 Chuuls
When there is a save to avoid the grapple, it says so.
