So I'm looking at a warlock, who gets their magic via a possessed weapon. A weapon possessed by the spirit of an ancient powerful Paladin. The Paladin, both in life and in their imprisoned afterlife, draws power from their god (before being sealed in the blade, they were their god's chosen champion on the material plane).
So what kind of Warlock would this be considered? Is this just a hexblade with more steps and some OC sprinkles? Is it more like a Celestial? Or would it be better to just run this as a full homebrew subclass, and talk with the DM about what extra spells and effects such a backstory would give?
Hexblade would fit, as such Warlock, you have made your pact with a mysterious entity from the Shadowfell - a force that manifests in sentient magic weapons carved from the stuff of shadow. If you want to homebrew ideas feel free to discuss with your DM.
Really you could make a fair case either way. From a mechanical standpoint, HB will let you get the best mileage as a melee-oriented warlock if you’re going to be wielding the weapon itself, and as a flavor bonus you can do your own smiting, but there’s not really a bad or wrong choice.
This could work as a Hexblade, but if so you're gonna have to do something about the 6th level Accursed Specter feature, since it seems kind of weird to have the spirit of a Paladin allow you to rip someone's soul out of their body and enslave it. So you either need to convince your DM to swap it for a different feature, or do some reflavoring. I suppose you could just say that, instead of ripping out the soul of the person you killed, you're just summoning the spirit of the paladin to physically manifest somehow.
Depends a bit on the nature of the Paladin and their deity; they’re not all LG white knights. But yeah, might want to reframe the nature of the spirit if you’re not planning to at least toy with some overt dark powers.
As much as I dislike optimisation, you could also take a level or so into Paladin, which could be reflavoured so that the Pally features are part of the pact?

It could be a Paladin that had sworn an oath of Vengeance ☺
I would say Hexblade, though only marginally.
