Currently suffering from a TPK in Tomb of Annihilation from Zorbos that came up from a random encounter roll. Now, the TPK is that big of a deal, but the CR for Zorbos, or more specifically their AC and HP values for the CR.
A potential AC 19 (metal) or more likely AC 17 (earth) combined with nearly 30 HP, and advantage on magical saving throws, and the ability to disarm, all seem like a bit much for a 1/2 CR monster.
3 Zorbos managed to TPK a level 1 party with almost no issues at all. Between the high AC and saving throws the party was easily dispatched in approximately 4 rounds, which felt like an eternity.
So my question is, is this CR correct for the monster, and if so, is it a bit over powered for a 1st level potential encounter.
3 monsters of CR 1/2 against a party of level 1 characters is more than a deadly encounter. According to the tables in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, to create an average difficulty encounter, 3 player characters are equivalent to 1 CR 1/2 monster.
Also keep in mind that the encounter tables in ToA are for the entire adventure. What may be deadly at level 1 (prompting the characters to flee) will be a walk in the park by level 5.
