OK found some info on what sort of damage a homebrew Molotov Cocktail should do. But I was just wondering if a flask of oil is considered flammable enough to serve that function? Or should you be playing in a scenario where distilled spirits are available?
Oh and yes I already know about Alchemist's Fire. Was just thinking of something that a player could get away with as an on the spot "solution".
Oil, nah, Booze, yes. But be prepared that Players will stack on Booze if they are even once allowed to use it this way. There is a reason that Alchemist's fire exists. Limited availability, and 50 gp per flask.
Yeah, in general homebrew explosives are a Pandora's Box for D&D. I wouldn't do anything stronger than the effect of just letting oil instantly light per the oil flask description.
Yes searches have yielded a wide range of possible damage for Molotov Cocktails. Up to d10 fire damage. Discussion with DM though and he has it simplified. Yes both oil and alcohol can be used. 5 pts for oil, 7 for alcohol. Pretty low but they can still be fun. Used a few to finish off a Young White Dragon last night.
Yeah, I would just treat a molotov cocktail as a pre-lit oil flask. Probably not accurate to a real-world molotov cocktail, but also probably not accurate to what a flask of burning oil will do to a person, so it's kind of a wash either way.
