Quick question, you look at spells like Ray of Frost or Firebolt and they increase in damage as the caster increases in levels, I was wondering if the size of the volume affected by cantrips such as shape water, should also increase as the caster gains levels. Just an idea, curious about other's opinions. :-)
Hmm maybe, or maybe the number of non-instantaneous effects can increase. Up to DM, I might allow it if a character liked using these types of spells a lot.
It isn't in the spell description. I'm playing a Druid right now who loves Mold Earth and he spends a few minutes every night that it's possible creating a "stockade" and a "moat" around our camp and a few minutes more every morning cleaning it up and returning everything to the way it was. He's used it in combat that way too, throwing up a super quick wall of earth to hide behind when we were ambushed. It didn't protect him completely, but it helped a lot! Increasing the amount of earth that he moves since he's 6th level now would have a major impact on combat when he's in a position to use it since he'd be able to hide more archers behind a quick and dirty wall.
Utility cantrips don't need to scale because they're typically equally useful at all levels. Damage cantrips would quickly become obsolete if they didn't scale, since the game expects the damage of your basic combat actions to increase over time.
True. Thank you. I just envisioned a higher level character impressing the lower level character with the ability to move more material for a role playing component. 😊
I was thinking that this would be a good use of war magic from the EK (7th level). The EK could cast mold earth to erect some defenses while still getting in an attack of some sort (particularly effective if the EK has a bow or some javelins, or is setting up the barricade for his allies and attacking melee fighters).
It might be problematic for Shape Water/Mold Earth specifically, as those cantrips deal no damage mostly due to the low volumes of material they move. You can reasonably assume you can't get a 5ft cube of water to deal significant damage, but what about a 20ft cube?
Of course I suppose you could just add some damage to the cantrips as they 'level up' without really breaking anything, as damage cantrips would steal deal more.

I appreciate all of the advice 😊
