I'm planning an encounter using Su-monsters for my Tomb of Annihilation campaign.
While reading the Psychic Crush ability description, I understand that there's no effect if the player save the (fairly easy) Wisdom DC11 check.
Psychic Crush (Recharge 5–6). The su-monster targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or take 17 (5d6) psychic damage and be stunned for 1 minute. The stunned target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Is that so? Seems like a very weak power, as it doesn't even have half damage when enemy saves...
It may seem weak, but I think you are underestimating the catastrophic nature of the Stunned condition. The lowest level spell which reliably applies that condition is level 8 Power Word Stun. Even a slight chance of being Stunned for any amount of time is a grave danger; you are removed from contributing to combat in any way, and are also very vulnerable to all sorts of damage. Against players with low wisdom save bonuses this ability could wreak havoc.
Agreed. Monks get the ability to Stun opponents for one round at 6th level and while Monks don’t do massive amounts of damage, it’s not that hard for a party to kill a stunned opponent no matter how many HP it has in one round.
