i didnt realize a rapier wasnt a light weapon haha, thri kreen secondary arms cant wield anything heavier then a light weapon. So say a shortsword, would a greatsword count as the first attack to trigger a bonus action (dual wield) attack from the shortsword? I could be a barbarian and avoid the question when in a rage and just do a greatsword with two shortswords, but if i were to do that it would be better to do two greatsword attacks and bonus action dual wield attack with a shortsword i think. Right now my campaign is level 6.
In real life rapier are longer than a long sword. They are thin and well balanced, almost the ideal weapon for a skilled warrior attacking an unarmored person. Not the best for a soldier facing armored foes, but for self defense against touchy nobles and rebelling peasants there are few if any better choices.
Could a thri kreen dual wield a greatsword in their upper hands and a rapier or some other light weapon in one of the lower hands with the dual wielder feat?
That is legal.
No, it absolutely is not legal. Go back to post #18. A Greatsword is a Two-Handed weapon. Two weapon fighting explicitly requires one-handed weapons. The Dual Wielder feat does not remove the one-handed weapon requirement. It only removes the light requirement.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.

No, the Dual Wielder feat neighter allow Thri-Kreen Secondary Arms to wield weapons without the light property, nor to use two-weapon fighting with two-handed melee weapons.
You're two-weapon fighting when you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can't do so while holding it in two hands.
I didnt realize a rapier wasnt a light weapon. But a thri kreen could hold a greatsword in their upper set of arms, and a light weapon in one of their lower arms.

Nope.
The two-weapon fighting rule still says "attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand" and a greatsword uses two hands.
And the dual-wielder feat don't help out either as it says "even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren't light" and thus only removes the "light" requirement but instead reiterates the one-handed one.
You could make the argument that once the character can hold a two hander in the upper hands, and a one hander in each of the lower hands. Once they can multi attack, one swing with the 2h, one with a one hander, then bonus action attack with the other one hander.
They don't have to attack both times with the one hander, and they don't have to attack both times with the same weapon for multi-attack.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
Yea that should work. If you have enough attacks for it then doing one with a light weapon is enough to qualify for the TWF bonus action attack, any other attacks you can make with your attack action is irrelevant so those can use any weapon you like.

That would technically work. It begs the question for Mantidae: why trade down your attacks from the Greatsword at all? It's a lot of investment for arguably worse output. The only thing dual wielding ever actually accomplishes is a single one-handed weapon attack as your one bonus action available per round.
You probably have bonus action options from your class/subclass already. If not, there's Great Weapon Master and/or Polearm Master feats.
A lot of people think dual wielding only really makes sense for rogues as a backup for sneak attack if they miss with their one attack from the Attack action, and there's a lot of weight to that. There's also a lot of weight to simply playing a character concept. When it comes to classes that have access to the Extra Attack feature, and have already decided to utilize a Two-Handed weapon primarily? Stick with that.

I think with the changes coming to SS and GWM, DW will be more competitive. The big thing holding it back was lack of feat support for increasing damage.
