Does a long run of bad dice rolls for all PCs count as fighting something very difficult?🤔
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I think the closest I've come to a TPK was a planetaur celestial thing. Pretty sure it was a homebrew and not from a sourcebook. I think only two of us were left standing at the end, out of four PCs and two alied npcs helping us. And those of us still up weren't in great shape.
Then a curse affecting my rogue kicked in and almost caused a party wipe, but she resisted it long enough to give a KOd ally a healing potion before it took control again and they KOd her before she could do any permanat harm.
(I’m the DM for this party, so this is their story, not mine.)
The party is hunting a girallon, the four-armed wood ape, in the Orcish ruin of Caer Shabrag. Among other foes, they encounter some Orcs, and, deciding to try to talk, discover the Orcs want the girallon dead too, so they pass through. An owlbear in the next room, who doesn’t mind orc-smell (hence the Orcs living there) attacks, and the one PC who isn’t a half-orc dies, though she’s hit with Gentle Repose. The other two, a cleric and a bard, both 3rd level, press on to the girallon.
What followed was a fight that would been very tough even if the third had survived. Somehow, they continued to dodge the girallon’s five attacks, healed each other again and again, and whittled down the beast’s massive HP. Once, as they were almost doomed, one rolled a 20 on their death save to keep both in the fight. And all dice were rolled openly, no fudging. By the time they finally fell, the girallon was down to eight hit points.
It was at this point that the Orcs, who had let the party through hoping they’d kill the creature, moved in. They threw three spears. The girallon fell.
But the two half-orcs were down to death saving throws, with no hope of healing. They rolled them one by one, and, by the gods’ grace, both lived.
It was the most intense session of the campaign. We had other character deaths, but it was the closest the group ever came to a TPK. I don’t think they realized how thin the wire was between them and death, every single turn. It was a moment where they were truly heroes.
Every proper D&D Group I have ever been to where I have not been the Dungeon Master has been crammed with at least three bullies. One of the groups, even the DM was a bully as were his friends. I have quit basically two D&D Groups because of bullies, and almost left a third after one of the worst people I have ever known joined. We had to work out with the group's moderators how to make sure I could not be in a group with that person, which was incredibly embarrassing and difficult especially when I was already relying on them to get me special seating in a side room because I have very sound-sensitive ears (a form of hyperacusis). However, we managed to sort out a plan and I don't have to put up with the bully that has handcuffed my character to an aggressive monster, threatened to eat my kenku by putting seasonings over me (they were a tabaxi), made sure I couldn't''t even really speak during sessions and ignored everything I did manage to say.
Yep. Bullies are the worst. Hardest actual monster, though? It'll have to be my lunatic werewolf shovel-handed monk-4 elements, fighter flying kobold that sticks forks in plug sockets.
threatened to eat my kenku by putting seasonings over me (they were a tabaxi),
That part actually sounds funny.
Not when it's three hours of that, being oppressed, and knowing that they are actually planning to go though with it. Your post is actually rather insensitive, tanksoldier.

Did I mention this murder-waiting-to-happen PC was a Noble who loved showers, was bestest friends with a soup-obsessed goblin, committed more insurance fraud than is strictly necessary, and was only around for 3 sessions (9 hours) total.
We are still low level in my in person campaign with friends but a pack of gnolls! We really weren't supposed to go try and hunt them down yet as they were too high level for us, but apparently my party likes to live on the edge. And also sleep in dangerous places and be awoken by a gnoll stabbing my character in the side and almost one-shotting her right there lol
The vampire spawn at the coffin shop in Curse of Strahd, which was sold to us as basically a TPK waiting to happen. 8 CR5 vampire spawn versus 5 level 4 PCs. We managed to lure them into an ambush by setting the upstairs of the building on fire, forcing them into a tiny area downstairs which we filled with radiant energy that causes them to lose about 20HP each per turn, in addition to whatever other damage we dealt. We even managed to stake a couple of them in coffins as well.
Back in 1e I (see sig) was part of a party going into the Demonweb Pits. We ran into Lolth, luckily without allies around. I happened to be off to the side when the party attacked. Lolth pretty much wiped them out with a wave of her hand. I figured I was next and rather than be tortured by her I tried to piss her off enough to have her kill me quickly. So I fired an arrow of slaying at her eye in a called shot and critted. Then the DM tried every possible resistance etc he could think of and rolled 10 (yes 10) crit fails in a row. Having run out of ideas he said I had killed Lolth and her deification energies flowed into me. Boy were the Drow confused when their deity went from being a chaotic evil goddess to being a neutral good god.
Venomfang in LMOP. I was a level three battlerager. We fought the dragon in the village, myself grappling it's leg, until the dragon decided to fly back to its lair. The DM said "alright, and you let go before it flies to high, right?". Long story short, it could not dislodge my grapple and I drove my Talon sword right through its belly and after a few heart pounding turns
No, I'm serious. A demon named Depression. We had to do several Wisdom saving throws. First, to avoid getting paralyzed. Then to avoid giving up so hard we'd slash our own throats.

Damn it man, it was a lot better line until you wrote that a day ago.
