The world IS flat, but this is treated realistically. IE: as you travel further from the centre of the disc, you begin to feel as though you are climbing up an increasingly steep hill as the pull of graivty goes from bein directly downward to a greater and greater angle backward toward the centre. The "edge" of the flat world is thus tantamount to the tallest mountain in this world, and there's a mirror world on the other side of it that has days when the "top" has nights.
