Those would definately be the only times I've seen Eberron any lower than 4th place.
Either way, I really hope Greyhawk isn't next up. It's just not a distinct enough setting for anything more than a fluff pamphlet, IMO. I know it's Mearl's fave, but I'd rather see Mystara than Greyhawk.
The great thing is that everyone who is coming to play D&D now can dive into any of these settings by going to DM's Guild and buying the PDFs and books of those old settings. We have enough material in 5th edition to easily convert any of these settings if we want (and some people have on DM's Guild already, to some degree).
Forgotten Realms is the setting WotC is sticking with because it is generic fantasy. It's the easiest to support. Unfortunately it leaves a lot of fans permanently yearning for the settings they loved to be renewed.
With their current release schedule, it is starting to seem unlikely that we will see most of these settings having any 5e published material. My guess is we might see Planescape and maybe Eberron. But Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Mystara are probably not different enough from Forgotten Realms for WotC to support.
I love D&D, I love 5e, but personally I haven't ever been a fan of FR. I actually think homebrew campaigns are the best way to go, but as for official settings I like Dragonlance and Greyhawk best.
Eberron has my vote. Also, I would love to see a new campaign setting that is realistic, as in no actual gods, planets, good necromancer, good guys worshiping "bad" gods, bad guys worshiping "good" gods, no actual "good" or "bad", and semi-logical explanations for everything.
Half of that is no more "realistic" than the alternative. Some of it less so. Especially the worship thing. See, the most recent manifest.zone where Kieth Baker talks about religion in Eberron.
Also, lack of gods is exactly as realistic as lack of magic. No more, no less.
Those would definately be the only times I've seen Eberron any lower than 4th place.
That was a surprise to me too, as Eberron always used to do well on the WotC forums. I believe it was the second most popular campaign setting in the weeks leading up to WotC deleting their forums.
The other setting that surprised me was Planescape. A lot of people tell me they like Planescape, but they don't talk about it as much as people talk about other campaign settings. I was kind of expecting it to be twice as popular as Spelljammer.
What if they made one full of the the world with maps of the original official world, along with revamped spells from past editions. Any DM who puts even a little effort in can build their own world. But thousands of players know nothing but the names and places of Gary Gygax and Dave Arneston. They hear about Dragon Lance, Gray Hawk, and Ravenloft. They know nothing the fear of the Tomb of Horrors (R.I.P. Player characters).
There's a lot of good stuff that could be brought nicely to the light for a new crowd to enjoy. Not everyone is in a big enough city for the Adventurers League.
Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
Just pulled 4 boxes of old AD&D (1e) & 2e stuff out of storage. I have Grewhawk stuff, Birthright stuff and even found Hollow World. Wonder how that would translate to 5e?
Plus Spelljammer, Ravenloft, FR, Darksun, and lots of other stuff to mine for things to throw at my players!

Don't count my vote but here's the campaign setting I'd like WotC to bring to 5e.
To the East (we've done the sword coast and use your imagination you can get to about Thay) But Yaïmmunahar? All those areas around Raurin, Semphar. There is a lot of land which I do not know about and needs to be updated. It looks amazing and I'd love them to fill the lore out some more.
Planescape. Probably the best adventure that WotC could release for the future of 5e. I'd definately see this as a likely choice by WotC.
Spelljammer (technically I'd love to see this come after the above) I think it would be a great setting for adventures and campaign, yet the more I think about it, the less I think it would work with the current 5e rule system. I think you'd be looking at an entirely new rule system to make the most of it.
Dark Sun (I can see this being done, but I am not terribly excited, I am 100% sure WotC would do a great job of it)
No offense, but anyone that says Greyhawk is too similar to the Forgotten Realms has little idea of what they are talking about. Greyhawk is a thematic antithesis of the Forgotten Realms, much more Sword & Sorcery than High Fantasy. Greyhawk is Law vs Chaos, the Forgotten Realms is [Insert Mary-Sue Character/Organization Here] vs Unmitigated Evil(!!!!!). Really, the only thing that feels similar between Oerth and Faerun is the aesthetic presentation of the core races. Greyhawk is also much more humano-centric than the Realms, where every other person is a Dragonborn or a Tiefling with daddy issues.
I feel like the Adventurer's Guide (I won't deign to call it a Campaign Setting Guide) will probably be either Eberron or Dark Sun as they are very different from Forgotten Realms from an aesthetic perspective. I would pre-order Eberron in a heart beat, that's good stuff, but Dark Sun doesn't interest me much at all.
Edit: Changed my mind, I really don't need anything to run Greyhawk right now, so I would wholly vote for Eberron to get the next treatment.
Did y'all ever play Shackled City? That was a really fun adventure that I enjoyed very much. I think a 5E treatment for it would be great. Now that I think about it, it might already have one on the DM's Guild...lol I should probably look before I post this but I really loved the city of Cauldron and the crazy weird game that Shackled City was. If you played it, what did you think of it? I played it when I was a younger player and not very experienced in gaming but still to this day it's one of my most memorable games.

"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."

I, too, am shocked by Eberron's low place. I feel like a lot of new gamers who came on with 4th or now with 5th don't understand what they are missing. But also, a lot of people I used to game with in the 3.5 days hated Eberron.

When Eberron won the competition and was chosen to be fully developed by WotC, they also purchased the 2nd place and 3rd place winners.
They are still sitting on those winners and the creators are under a strict non-disclosure agreement. They can't even give a basic idea of what they were like (although I'm sure the write ups exist somewhere, I've never been able to find them)
How about WotC open the vault and let us at least see whats cookin!

How 'bout a nice Greek fantasy, with mythologically accurate gorgons? Or Celtic, with sidhe?

Yeah. I have found some offensive slurs such as "Eberrations", or later "Abeirron", by people who disliked both Eberron and 4e FR.

I've been reading some D&D history/biographies on Gygax, and now I'm kinda' interested in this setting.

FR is so bland, drab, stereotypical and boring.

I treat clerics as using faith for casting, not a diety granting magics to them. As for magic I treat it as an unexplained science.

Hear! Hear! To the Old World Adventurers guide!
I'm between Eberron and Planescape here. Realistically speaking, those two are the settings with most possibilities to have a manual of sorts in 5e.

Don't get it wrong, but the humano-centric stuff is what makes Greyhawk less attractive to me. That trope is plain generic in fantasy.
