The other campaign I’m running, Curse of Strahd, is coming to an end and I was thinking of running a new non-book campaign.
I always liked the idea of a campaign run in a far away land where the PC’s are unfamiliar with the setting. I also liked the Arabic themed Al-Qadim setting so thought of running it there. Lastly I’m fond of running a horror setting.
what I’ve got till now is that a dark comet fell in the deep Zakharan desert. People have flocked to this desert as pieces of the comet are said to imbue people with telepathic and psionic abilities and are heavily sought after and fetch a high price.
There are some rumours of adventures disappearing and being attacked but those are certainly rumours to scare off potential comet seekers...
I was thinking of making the comet an obsidian black and pieces grant minor psionic or telepathic abilities, the effect is larger the more pieces one collects but also poison or madden the wearer.
The antagonist would be star spawns or star spawn inspired, Lovecraftian to add the horror element.
I need more help to flesh it out, especially with desert travel and maybe the Al-Qadim setting. All help and constructive criticism is welcome. Thank you in advance.
I like it, just random thoughts to get the ball rolling if you're still thinking about this.
Sources for inspiration: The Dark City (maybe there is a group of people with psionics controlling the rest of the population of a city), Gerudo from LoZ: Breath of the Wild (not the all female part, but adapting to their environment), you could even do something like Tzica from WH40k - city where most people have some psychic abilities and the city has adapted to this to the point where a waiter might just bring your bill automatically without asking for example (but sounds like you want something darker, so maybe that but its slowly corrupting the inhabitants at night or something).
I'd also research the cultures of the real- world region that serves as inspiration for the game world. You may be able to draw ideas from existing myths and folklore.
