I got introduced to dnd about a year ago by a friend of mine who showed me a podcast called HighRollers. Anyway, I started DMing a Homebrew recently (5 sessions in, 6-7 hour sessions) and I was researching how to make a good villain and I sort of thought back to some really books I've read. Specifically, Harry Potter. I wanted to get my PC's to get to know the villain but in a way thats not going to kill them in the process. So I thought Tom Riddles Diary.... How would I make something like that work. Would only 1 PC be able to see it. How could they interact with it? Can they interact with it? Is there a better way for your PC's to understand/know your Villain without killing them?
This is a very cool idea. I would maybe make it something like a pact of the tome, and with the invocation from class variants that lets you talk telepathically (can't remember the exact name). I would maybe give it to someone who has a patron or God etc. Like a warlock, paladin, cleric or anyone with the acolyte background. If not, a rogue or bard is always good. Don't give too much to the PCs, they have to learn it. Tom doesn't say how to kill him, or much else other than a glimpse of the past and his name. Maybe something cryptic or puzzling, like the glimpse Harry gets.

Also thanks in advance ;)

Yeah, that would actually make a lot of sense since the villain is a Warlock.
