So i’m running a Harry Potter themed dnd campaign for some friends (centered around Ilvermorny in 1925 america) and the current adventure i have planned i’m not super happy with so i’m gonna rewrite it.
If anyone had any suggestions for a good kind of mystery adventure please let me know.
I’d like to have it start kinda like the books and movies did, where it kinda started out as a mystery then turned into something more dangerous, the players will be going through all 7 years so i need to make it stretch
Again if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know ^.^
So you're looking to have the players advance through the years at Ilvermorny, and for them to all be wizards? Is there a D&D style system for jk rowling's world? I imagine it would feature an array of wizard classes to focus on (possibly the actual classes in the schools, IE defence against the dark arts, divination, etc.).
For an adventure to compare to Harry Potter, the trick is going to be to have a single BBEG who is gaining power, initially starting weak enough to be readily defeated with the proper approaches and then later becoming so powerful as to be best avoided and fought in the background, destroying their "horcruxes", if you like.
Having just read through the texts on Ilvermorny, I wonder if William the Pukwudgie would feature fairly prominently as the instigator of quests, as he is supposedly the same one as helped make the school. Is there any major reason for the 1925 datestamp you're aiming for?
Tying it into the events of the books or films would go a long way to making it feel exciting, I feel. The trick will be getting the balance, as players will likely not enjoy an excessive amount of lessons!
I made a bunch of Harry Potter spells a long time ago, as well as an additional system for using magic. If you're interested, I can share them with you.

All stars fade. Some stars forever fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Homebrew:Magic Items,Monsters,Spells,Subclasses ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If there was no light, people wouldn't fear the dark.
I'm Dming something similar, as in the setting takes place at a magic school and the campaign will spread over ~ 4 years. Not Harry Potter themed though!
The overall plot is that, about every 2K years there is some sort of extinction event happening and the party will eventually have to stop the next one and end the cycle. And, there is a hidden mysterious organization that knows these events happen and they are directly related to the events. But, of course the party is currently unaware of this fact and I'm leaving little clues that the world is actually much older than anyone thinks it is. Right now, the party has not pieced everything together but this will be a slow burn campaign so they have plenty of time to find out! And as they find out more information, the more dangerous things will become for them.
But how I am structuring my campaign: "School Session" - The party is in class and there is a lot of RP moments and some school events and missions. "Free Days" - imagine when Harry Potter would go to Hogsmeade. These days are just like that! Usually something happens in town to drive the plot and let the characters know what's going on outside of school. And finally the "internship" missions - This is how I add the typical DND dungeon crawling. The party gets paid to complete a quest and how well they perform they earn a "grade" aka items/money/weapons.
I hope this helps spark some ideas :) I'm loving my school themed campaign and its fun to know someone is doing something similar.
I think that a star spawn would be a good monster because they could be a good substitute for a dementor with some tweaks and changing the name from star spawn to dementor.
So you're basically stealingborrowing inspired by the plot of the books and movies? Or, you want it to be 7 years, like the books, but not the same plot?

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

I think Strixhaven could be the closest analogy of a Magic School setting/plot in DnD.
