I'm playing a Level 5 Tortle Necromancer, and my DM wants me to come up with some future goals. The way I've made my character was that he had an exceptional ability of using Necromancy magic from a very young age. He's interested in the body and the way things work. His studies have allowed him to be quite adept at preparing bodies for burial, as well as performing last rites for them. My idea is to use Speak with Dead to ask if I can use corpses to fight along side my friends preventing them from facing a similar fate. My broadest plans are to study life of all forms while conducting field research (Adventuring) but from there there's not a big idea i can think for this character. The only other plan I've come up with, is to research extending life, as Tortles live to be 50-ish but Tortoises live to be hundreds of years old, but that sounds like I'm sending him done the road to Lich-hood and I'm not sure if I'm down for that. Any other ideas? I'm willing up to discussion and sharing ideas. Also I suppose our setting makes a difference slightly, so we're playing in Wildemount.
Just a suggestion but since necromancers are usually associated with evil, they generally try to attain lich-hood. However, if your character isn't really interested in that - perhaps I might suggest that maybe while he's learning the ins and outs of the body, perhaps he also wishes to start learning ancient knowledge or perhaps become like a 'Batman' to necromancers - using his powers for good in order to hunt down the more wicked necromancer covens wherever he finds them?
That's not a bad idea. I'm playing him more as a True Neutral type, but due to the circumstances we agree that Chaotic Neutral would be the best kind of alignment since it's not lawful to disturb the dead like this.
Lichdom is a cliche path associated with Necromancy. If you want to flavor it a little different and less implicitly evil, how about Clone, with experiments along the way in Simulacrum? Possibly some golem work too? Your Turtle Necromancer researches the mechanics of the body but also understands the animating energy of the soul, and given his people's likely folklore about "shells" in life, your Necro uses that metaphor for his life extension goal. "When my shell passes, my life will enter a new shell to protect it." Something like that. Tortles in the the published lore, adventure and return to their home folk towards life's end, reproducing and passing on all their knowledge to their offspring. Your Tortle's goal, whether his magical shenanigans allow them to reproduce or not, is simply to be around a lot longer and return with the greatest story about life. Given that, even Reincarnate may be worth some play.
Yes not all those spells mentioned are necromancy technically, but they seem the sort of magic your Tortle may invest adventuring time to find and study.
My posting scheduled is irregular: sometimes I can post twice a week, sometimes twice a day. I may also respond to quick questions, but ignore harder responses in favor of time.
My location is where my character for my home game is (we're doing the wild beyond the witchlight).

I'm playing a gnome necromancer. Her long-term aim is to inherit the family business - there's good money to be made in, er, recycling. Here, take a card...

Haha I like that idea. I'm not certain how well I'll be able to pull it off though.
