So i tried to get a session of Curse of Strahd going before the pandemic and me group died session 1
cause someone wanted to attack the ghosts in the murder house
They want to start up again fresh but im not 100% how to go about doing online with DnD beyond and discord. Any tips from more expereinced DMs on this?
As Imalius said, I have a fair amount of moduals here on beyond. I did log onto Roll20, though, and noticed i bought the Curse of Strahd supplements way back
I ran an online game through most of quarantine and didn’t spend a cent: we used Discord for voice calls, did theater-of-the-mind combat, and rolled physical dice (hopefully your friends are as honest as mine). You don’t need to buy or learn a complicated online tabletop to run a fun game!
Theatre of the mind is perfectly playable but many, like myself like some sort of map as it helps clarify things like "how many of the bad guys can I hit with shatter?", or, "can I run tothe wizard without drawing an op attack from his minons, if so would it require a dash?" You can ask the DM these questions but seeing the map alows you to thnks through all the possibilities much quicker.
You can make online table top as complex as you like , you can play with the "map" as a simple grided square, maybe with a few lines drawn on it to mak things like walls or potential cover, it is also easy to import an image if you have one / get something suitable with a quick google search. Do don't have to create character sheets on a table top (though I think it is worth the effort to do so as it makes it easier to when you are playing (juat click fireball and it will automatically put on ther screen it is a dex save, your save DC and wht thge damage it, this is much quicker than looking everything up on your character sheet rolling all the dice and adding them up)
I would recommend rolling dice publicly even if everyone is honest, people are suspicious of the extremes. I have rolled 3 natural 20s on the run, I know a DM who rolled eight 6s for damage with a fireball, these were publ;cly thrown but if the other players have no way of confirming it there will be suspicions of cheating (and cheating in D&D is more common than we wouldlike ot think). If you don't want to use a VTT you can roll dice in discord using avrea, or if everyone has a webcam, roll where your camera can see it.
Yes - I think the combo of DND Beyond for your char, Roll 20 for maps, etc, and Beyond 20 to connect the rolls in DND Beyond to Roll 20 is very common. in terms of video and audio - meet.google.com is good and simple, Discord is good but a bit more complicated for your newbie players. Owlbear Rodeo has a strong following and is completely free. If you do not want all the advanced stuff in Roll20, it could be a good choice.

I'd recommend using DnDBeyond, beyond20 (so you can use your character sheets in DnDBeyond to roll in a VTT) and then roll20 for maps, tokens etc.
I've not used discord, we use google meet for our voice/camera
Question is what material you already got and how much you are willing to invest to learn Roll20 and or to buy the module in Roll20 again.
there's no need to buy the module in roll20 if you have it here, or from any other source.
But it is unnecessary complex if you import your material from somewhere else anyway.
