So in our campaign, my character was cursed with lycanthropy and, deciding that it fit his character really well, I decided I wanted to learn how to have full control over my transformations the way a natural werewolf would. During one session he learned that by cooking a certain recipe (my character is a chef by trade) he could acquire that power. Here's the funny part though: basically everyone in our group has ADHD and we forgot to write down what the recipe was. So as usual for our campaign we're going to retcon it. The DM and I had the idea that a key ingredient of this recipe ought to be the flesh of a monster that my character must kill himself and now we are researching to find a suitable monster. Is there a sufficiently tough beast, monstrosity, or aberration that would be thematically appropriate? EDIT: this is in the late stages of a campaign; we are all level 15. If necessary the monster could just be a lower CR monster just given buffs.
What is the source of lycanthrope in the game world? Is there a specific link to lycanthrope and wolves?
In general historically you simply need to be bitten by a lycan and then survive the sickness then try and control the lycanthrope. But there are also stories of people being cursed/changed into lycans for doing something or until they do something.
How about a rare snake, all but extinct, that naturally evolved to eat werewolves? It's venom de-transforms them to make them easy, disoriented prey. You need the venom so you can reverse alchemy it, dilute it, and make it into doses letting you control your transformations.
Make up a story about how this must be harvested at the full moon and used in a potion to either cure the victim or hold off the transformation. Maybe even kill the victim if used wrong.

I hope that helps a bit.
The source of lycanthropy in this campaign is pretty much the default.
My point is "default" often depends on what area of the world you are from.
If you consider European default then IMHO it would be a bite from a werecreature .
