I guess I am just used to a more cooperative group idea.
We 'loan' out cash as needed to new players or starting characters and we tend to keep a small pile of simple magic items anyone can pull from as needed. If that doesn't help out the new character then our Dm tends to hand out a better magic item to bring them up to relatively equal power.
And we always take in game time off to gain new items or magic items like potions and scrolls. Normally between levels. It also gives the rogues and druids a chance to gather go on mini missions alone. Gather components and rob a few homes. If we are all together for the session the DM just makes a few dice roles for success or failure and hand waves the in game time away. Boom we all went up a level, trained, filled in our spell books, got fitted for better armor or weapons and so on.
When we start a new campaign we normally start with just a kit and no cash.
