Ok community members! Here's today's quandry. Now that I'm secure in the knowledge that Booming Blade can be copied via the Sorcerer's Twinned Spell Metamagic, I'm pondering if I should multiclass for 3 levels. Here's where I stand now: (stats were rolled, and include racial benefits and 1 ASI).
Level 7 Eldritch Knight, Mountain Dwarf with Dueling fighting style. Full Plate + Shield for 20 AC.
Str: 20
Dex: 11
Con: 16
Int: 14
Wis: 12
Charisma: 8
So, once I hit 7th level I took the Shadow Blade spell and for the purposes of comparisons moving forward, that's my weapon of choice. I know it's a Concentration spell, but I already have a +6 to that Saving Throw, and I'm taking War Caster at 8th level. Now then, if I were to continue as a Fighter, I would get Indomitable at 9th level, Eldritch Strike at 10th (useless for me until at least 13th level) and then Extra Attack (x2) at 11th. From now until 11th I would generally attack via Booming Blade, which gives me a bonus attack via War Magic (this would actually start in Round 2, cuz I need Round 1's bonus action to cast Shadow Blade and I'd make 2 normal attacks), plus the melee attack from BB (with the extra 1d8 from being 5th level or higher) and then the potential 2d8 thunder damage lingers in case my target moves.
When I get to 11th level BB does an extra 2d8 for the melee attack. So I can choose between 3 normal attacks: 2d8 + 7 each, or BB which looks like 2d8+7 (War Magic attack), 2d8 + 7 BB attack + 2d8 BB damage, and THEN the potential 3d8 thunder damage (cuz I'm 11th). Assuming all attacks hit the numbers go:
3 regular attacks: Min damage = 27, Average damage = 48, Max damage= 69. BB route: Min damage = 20, Average damage = 41, Max damage = 62 + potential 3d8 more.
But this discussion isn't about which of those options to take, that will either be some other thread, or something I'll worry about based on the specific scenario I'm in. Now what happens if I Multiclass to Sorcerer for 3 levels. I'm not entirely sure how it works when you multi from a 1/3 caster to a full caster, but if I'm correct at EK8/Sorceror 1 I would have level 3 slots (but not spells). then at 2nd sorcerer level I get sorcerer points and 4th level slots (but not spells) and at EK 8/Sorcerer 3 I would have 5th level slots (and now 3rd level spells), plus Metamagic. I haven't lost spell progression because an EK doesn't get 3rd level spells until 13th anyway. I have way more slots to use my EK spells, and whatever new spells I take from the Sorcerer list (though with a Charisma of 8 I'll be very selective lol). The main reason I am considering this is the shenanigans of twinning Booming Blade while in melee with at least 2 opponents. In that event it goes something like this (again, starting Round 2):
Cast BB on target A and twin it to target B. I get to attack A for 2d8 + 7 + 2d8, B for 2d8 + 7 + 2d8, get 1 additional attack on either, or even a 3rd target (War Magic) for another 2d8 +7, and then both have 3d8 thunder hanging over their heads if they move. Max damage if everything hits: 101 + the potential thunder damage.
What I lose down the road: 1 ASI, Extra Attack (x3) and Improved War Magic (which to me is still kinda whatever). I also lose out on level 4 spells, but those don't kick in for an EK until 19th level anyway. But by the time I'm EK 15/Sorcerer 3, I have spell slots all the way to 6th, which means I can very nicely upcast my 3rd level spells, or have Shield and Absorb Elements for DAYS!
Is this a crazy build just for some silly Booming Blade shenanigans? I mean I'll still be able to go the 3 attack route when I hit a combined 14th level, and I think this gives both a spellcasting bump and some combat utility in multi-foe situations. What do you guys think? Sorry for the long read lol #sorryNotsorry
Seems not really worth it for me. It's three levels for something you say you won't use once you can multi-attack.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I did something similar with a scourge aasimar. My build was slightly different, however. My starting stats:
Str 8
Dex 15
Con 13 (14)
Int 10
Wis 10
Cha 15 (17)
Starting class is fighter (EK) to level 6, then dragon sorcerer to level 14. EK gets Booming Blade, Message, Absorb Elements, Feather Fall & Shield (none are based on your ability score). First ASI Dex to 16, Charisma to 18. Second ASI (from 6th-level fighter), War Caster. Then Dex & Cha to 20 each with the last three ASI's.
The idea with this is to cannibalise a lot of your spell slots for spell points that you can use for twinning and quickening. Using quicken for Green Flame Blade (from sorcerer), and then twinning booming blade, you can end up hitting multiple targets for a significant amount of damage. Add in the scourge aasimar's ability to add damage from AoE and to an attack, plus your Elemental Affinity on the GFB, plus Action Surge, and you can haste yourself, blink, initiate radiant consumption, and get off one regular attack before or after having moved double your speed in the first turn of a combat. Blink means you're often not even a target on the battlefield when it's not your turn. And when you do, between shield and war caster and absorb elements, you're pretty damned hard to kill and can be a nightmare to get away from (BB warcaster).
Single target damage is your only real weakness, and even then, that can be offset with Extra Attack so it's not like it's that big a deal.

If you want to see how multiclassing partial casters works, I suggest giving it a go in the builder.
Basically, as a single class character you divide your current level by 2 for Rangers and Paladins or 3 for Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters and round up to determine your equivalent "full caster level" for spell slots per day. So an 8th level Eldritch Knight has the same spell slots per day as a (8/3 => 2+2/3 => round up => 3) 3rd level sorcerer. When multiclassing you round down each class individually and then add the results so an EK 8/ Sorcerer 1 has the same spell slots per day as a (8/3 => 2+2/3 => round down => 2 (EK) + 1 (Sorc) => 3) 3rd level sorcerer but only knows 1st level spells from the Sorcerer and 1st and 2nd level spells from the Eldritch Knight.
Because of this and EK 8/Sorc 1 has 4 1st level spell slots and 2 2nd level spell slots. At EK 8/Sorc 2 you are now equivalent to a 4th level sorcerer and gain an extra 2nd level spell slot per day. At EK 8/Sorc 3 you are now equivalent to a 5th level sorcerer and gain 2 3rd level spell slots and learn a 2nd level sorcerer spell.
In order to learn 3rd level sorcerer spells your would need to be EK 8/Sorc 5, which just so happens to be 13th level, the same time you would have learnt them as a pure Eldritch Knight (although you would be able to cast those 3rd level spells at 4th level because you have the spells per day of a 7th level sorcerer).
At EK 15/Sorc 3 you would be equivalent to an (15/3 = 5 + 3 = 8) 8th level sorcerer and only have 4th level spell slots maximum.

You would need at least a 13 in Charisma to multiclass to Sorcerer, unless your DM is using different multiclassing rules.
Omg. Of course I know that lol sometimes I space when I get caught up in a build. 🤬
okay, let’s assume for the moment that I had 14 charisma. I’m still interested in views of the pros and cons
