In a sense multiclassing is an “art” - figuring out when to do it isn’t a simple formula or a single best time. If your doing a 1-2 level dip and then going with one of the classes the rest of the way it’s best to do it early when leveling is fast so you don’t fall too far behind. If your trying to go deeper in both, like getting to L5 in a martial for the extra attack, then you probably want to do that first then switch. Story based multiclassing will occur when the story demands it.. So, what are you thinking about? Each multiclass calls for its own decisions about when to switch.
First campaign ever, never multiclased. Im a Hexblade lvl 7 and i'll love to keep this character till high level. At some point i would love to add 3 lvls in fighter but im having a hard time deciding when to do so. It feels like im delaying important stuff for ages with 3 lvls but at the same time the benefits are awesome once i have them. Furthermore if i do get to play this character at high levels the combo would would go hard or at the very least be cool.
English isnt my first language, i hope im being clear and ty in advance to anyone that takes the time to lend me some insight
It depends on the campaign settings itself. If you see that “any other class “ would provide advantage at that point in time, that’s when you know it’s time. Say for instance, our group needs more damage, and I can get AS as a fighter, and another fighting style as well, I’m going for it. So it’s just relevant to what’s happening in the campaign and how long it is going to last. Are you going to level 20 or stopping at 12,,, yada yada. Just a judgement call. But in the end it all balances out.
