I like swords and melee weapons. They're cool! But sometimes I wanna shoot a musket or a longbow or some other similar ranged weapon. Seeing all my dexterous friends run around with their own swords (that have the finesse property) AND have bows/xbows/guns makes me jealous! Would having a ranged weapon benefit me? And could I make it work as a strength based character? (also I know there are muskets in the players handbook, but was there ever a blunderbuss? Or is my mind playing tricks on me?)
The only thing I can think of currently is using true strike, but that also requires high intelligence to be effective. Any ideas how to tackle this conundrum?
Usually str builds default to thrown weapons for range. Javelin, hand axe, etc.
You can also get some real mileage from a trident as it has the topple mastery. Bring those flying creatures back down to you.
Or make friends with the wizard and get them to use their concentration on fly for you.
And keep in mind while dex characters have finesse weapons, they typically have lower damage.
And there’s nothing stopping you from using a longbow as a str build. Put your dex at a 12 or even 14 if you can make the points work and you’ll still be pretty good with them.
For weapons, yeah the STR-based thrown weapons like Trident or Javelin will be more accurate, plus their perks mentioned.
If your DEX is decent enough, a Longbow or Heavy Crossbow are good options, especially because Great Weapon Master now applies to them as well. You’d surpass its 13-STR requirement. If your DEX isn’t that high, though, hitting things will be more difficult than Javelin or Trident.
Thanks for the replies. You've all pretty much answered my question! thanks guys! Although now I wonder, is there a way to get cantrips/spells asa a non spell caster that aren't necessarily feats? For example: lets say I'm playing a martial class, and I want a cantrip and a level 2 spell but I don't want to get a feat like fey touched or magic initiate. what could I do?

There's a handful of magic items, but they're all very limited use and unless your DM is feeling generous with the Enspelled items, it's a very limited selection of spells. Beyond that or already being certain species or subclasses, there's no way aside from feats to gain access to spellcasting.

I answered this in my previous post, High Elf or infernal tiefling are available for everyone (they , paladins can also get blessed strikes. )
There are also some expanded rule species with cantrips (eg kobald and fire genesi). As Ace of rogues said you might be able to get a magic item.

If one of your mental stats is pretty good you could get access to a cantrip:
