So I have a character that I could take one of two ways, he will be 1 level Rogue, 5 levels Ranger. Was planning to go 5 Ranger/15 Rogue, but I could go 11 Rogue, 4 Bard, 5 Ranger.
From level 6, should I take the next 4 levels in Rogue or Bard?
Scout/gloomstalker is a good combo (I would have recommend trying to get scout's level 17 feature, but you would only have it at level 20 and extra attack is very valuable in meantime).
I'm a big advocate for multiclassing, but usually only recommend doing 2 classes unless you are after a specific combination of features.
If you were to go bard, I would recommend going 5 levels for font of inspiration.
He is an archer, the only reason I am considering a dip into Bard is because our group is really light on casters, one player is going Bard having started Warlock and having access to healing word was really useful, so I figure from an rp perspective, they will have been a Bard for 5 levels by the time I pick it up, so my character could learn from them.
I think what I will do is just see how the game is going and see if the extra healing is needed.
Hexblade Warlock could be an option. Honestly I think dips for healing are awful. Unless you plan on real investment in the class that gets you the healing, I just generally think it's a waste. If you dip only a few levels, your heals are going to be tiny in comparison to your party hit points. Even if you went 4 levels of bard to 10, your cure wounds upcast will be 2d8, or 12 on average. You'd be lucky to have a heal that small matter very much. I think you're better off just being really good at something. Multiclassing works best in my opinion when the mechanics you're taking the classes for work well together to do the same thing instead of have classes compete with each other to do more things but less well. Hunter and rogue work pretty well together in dealing damage and hunter does give you a bit of healing. A hunter castingHealing Spirit would do a much better job of healing over time than cure wounds from a bard ever would.
I do plan to have Healing Spirit, the bard dip wouldn’t be just healing, having looked it over my current plan is to take Ranger to 5, then Rougue to 4, maybe 5 depending on how often I get engaged directly in combat and then 4 levels bard, then the rest Rogue.

What are you trying to achieve with your character? I'm not sure what you're going for mechanically.

Ranger5 gets healing spirit, basically healing word on acid ;)
If anything, I would rather continue ranger longer than 5 instead og going into another casterclass with no synergy.
someone in the group vould also considder the inspiring leader feat if you lack health :)
Yeah, I debated about staying in Ranger, but it gets me very little compared to Rogue
Just make sure one of your level 2 spells is healing spirit and go rogue 15. You can even get rid of cure wounds once you have it if you want.
