There's no avoiding it, because the rogue's player has already initiated PVP.
well if peace was never an option then it really comes down to how involved the others are. if hes been stealing party gold and they know in game then there is no reason they cant simply give him the old straiten up your act or we will leave you behind ultimatum. if its well beyond that point then just ditch him at the next in without saying a word. as it stands nothing from a party perspective can reasonably argue why you would keep a man you cant trust around even if hes useful. at the end of the day if they party knows they are being robbed and know its him ether kill him while he sleeps or ditch him while he sleeps. ether way the player will need a new character and perhaps this will give him perspective for next time.
I disagree there is no reason to play with people like this. People who exhibit these types of selfish play can seldom be changed. It will only get worse as time goes on killing their character will only escalate their poor behavior. They need to be kicked from the group and honestly these problems are the DM's fault. Any DM with any ability would know stealing from your fellow players in a game that at its core is supposed to be cooperative is not going to end well.
Some DMs do this/allow this by design, in homebrews.
just going to throw that out there for why immediately gets bing your pitchfork to kick them out of the group was never even considered by me or some others as an option.
if they do it multiple characters in a row. Yes. Now it’s not a specific character instance or isolated incident, but a pattern behavior of being a tool. And you can kick them from the group. But the first go. Deal with the Character not the player. As maybe it’s intentional for reasons you cannot fathom, and not they are just a prick.
I guess but even after just one character like this I would not play with them again. If a DM allows this by design that should be disclosed during session zero if not everyone is on board with it then it shouldn't be in the game. Honestly though its not a tough concept DND is a social game why would anyone want to play an antisocial person?

DMs usually don’t session 0 give away Darth Vader is your father. Amongst the other PCs.
I have mentioned before I believe I played in a campaign once where for 30+ sessions guy in our party was doing shady stuff. Turned out to be BBEG. Switches with the DM. And the DM becomes a new PC who is the quest giver vs the BBEG. They were co DMs the whole time and the other 4 of us never knew.
i think we are in fact getting too pitch forky here and its actually off topic. the original question was how to stop players from stealing gold/ possibly other items. im disregarding the player aspect; clearly that is not the problem / is not a problem yet.
moving on ive listed a rather convoluted protection already; but ill assume that's probably a bit much or not yet feasible.
Secret Chest : if you got a (Wizard, Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster, Arcana Domain) able to cast lvl 4 spells keeping you goods on the astral plane is a solid bet cons:costs 5000gp, the mini chest can be stolen.
Arcane Lock: (Wizard, Artificer) covers closed door, window, gate, chest, or other entryway. if other entryway can count a a bags opening or a pockets then purchasing sealable bags and clothes with zipper pockets ect. could then have an arcane lock on each separate space at 25gp and at the low lvl of 2 this is a bit more feasible. cons: he could just steal the whole thing but hes going to have a hard time hiding the fact he took your coat or chest ect.
Glyph of Warding: (Bard, Cleric, Wizard, Artificer) looking to protect yourself? or do some damage? this can put the hurt on whoever tries to take it with explosive rune. or maybe you wannabe nice use spell glyph to simply hold person on him? ether way at 200gp they are sure to reconsider after the first time you purse explodes into golden shrapnel (be sure to argue extra dmg) cons: possibly dangerous to to the user if you mess up yourself (although i could see setting the trigger to being more then 10 ft away from you for X amount of time, might also work as an emergency hand grenade in a tight spot)
Magic Mouth: (Bard, Wizard, Artificer) this one is a maybe as im unsure if "hoose an object that you can see and that isn't being worn or carried by another creature." implies it can never be worn or carried; but should it work fine then this can be your go to alarm system as it can last 10 mins and you can fill it with shrieks or what have you. only costing 10gp this is probably the cheapest option you just need to be clever with the trigger
Lock of Trickery Common magic item makes it harder to pick your locks
Tiny Hut: (Bard, Wizard, Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster) this one is just plain rude but you can cast it and exclude the rogue leaving him outside and giving you 8 hours of peace knowing he cant take anything.
Locate ObjectConcentrationfind your stuff afterwards
these are you options as far as i can think of right now that dont involve murder/ player banishment i hope it helps and i hope we get this back on track
or to really piss him off just have your character have him hold your gold for you. out of game keep a running tally that way he can't steal it. or use a spell that is specifically designed for this situation, locate object.

thats really not at all what I was referring to. A jerk player stealing from the party because they played too much GTA is not the same as the points you described lets try and steer clear of strawman arguments since they are counter productive. PVP should be discussed in a session zero not everyone wants to play a game like that and I really don't understand why anyone would think its ok to force someone to play a style of game they don't want to.

“Let’s try and steer clear of strawman arguments” then you assume this was not discussed.
Yeah... I’m walking away. This is a style of debate you have going. Where the only thing that comes from it is mod intervention.
