I think I posted this in the wrong thread so reposting to this place! I would appreciate any tips on how to roleplay this character a bit more and any suggestions for how to deal with Oaths.
Player Backgrounds
A few months ago my friends and I got together to play some DND. Lockdown was the catalyst and we used it as an excuse to catch up every week as we are pretty good friends. Most of us only played together once before back at college so we were relatively new, except the DM who is experienced.
Campaign Background
Our initial campaign was a homebrew one by the DM as it started out rather lighthearted. I was playing an Oath of the Crown Torm Paladin as the main tank for the party. His back story was that he used to be a front-line medic/paladin in an army from the North - but his company got annihilated in a battle. And fast forward many years later is how he ended up meeting the other PCs. After a few weeks of playing around the homebrew, the DM decided for us to try out Descent into Avernus.
I was always fond of gritty type of movies, games, and tv so without reading ahead as I did not want to meta game, but Descent into Avernus sounded like a good match up with the story from Heart of Darkness. At the moment, we're a few months into the campaign (if I had to guess, maybe we're 2/5 through Descent but I don't know).
Current Character Idea I have been working with the DM on my character's slow descent into madness. One of the key things I have been doing is we are trying to not blatantly tell the other players about my plan with the DM. Initially my PC was always a bit hesitant to fight as a former combat medic but lately he is happier to get into fights. The way I played it is that at first I would argue against fighting but recently I have started to "give in" to the group wanting to fight our way through monsters/issues (so I was arguing less and less every so often).
I also recently start to describe his armour as covered in blood every so often (it helps that the armour is relatively new and not already battered). When I got the "Find Steed", I named my warhorse Marlow as a hint to the protagonist from Heart of Darkness. When another party member PC died unexpectedly (2x critical fail death saving throughs) – and I have been using that as an catalyst for my PC to start to “crack”. This PC death was 2 sessions ago so it’s still pretty raw/a new incident.
Oaths
One thing that I have discussed with the DM is to change my paladin oath from Oath of the Crown to Oath of Conquest or Vengeance. We are going to try to change over at some point but don’t tell the other characters – just that I start using different abilities. The PC would go from a rather defensive set up to a vengeful one or a one that uses fear.
What I cannot do yet is reconcile how would I maintain being a Torm Paladin with either of those two Oaths. I am also not sure which of the Oaths would be more “in character” (or more fun to play).
Thoughts?
I would appreciate any comments and thoughts! From tips on dealing with the Oaths to other elements I should start adding into my character. I do not have a fully fleshed out plan yet as I think it would be good to let the character develop organically - but I would like to have some useful tips or ideas! I have penciled in mind at some point to have a redemption arc but that's far too down the line (or he completely falls).
Also happy to give more details about the character or where in the campaign we are (I wanted to avoid spoilers in my initial post!).
