Can't help but wonder if this is WotC way of moving away from a Judeo-Christian / Euro concept of an angel to a more world-friendly theme...
According to the video, it’s more of a reaction to tester feedback that the previous version was too close to aasimar. This was more to distinguish the Ardlings in their own right.
I wanted a dog race in the game but, this seems like a cop out. Like an after thought "Oh they want more beast folk? Eh wrap it all in one race so we can focus on more elves!" Also not a big fan of celestials. Idk seems kinda pretentious to be like "Oh! Look at me! I'm GoDlY!!!"

If I’m being honest; I mostly enjoyed Ardling for both providing the capability for a dog race (finally), and also providing a tangible connection to the Hound Archons.
My idea as it seemed like D&D wanted to make Tieflings that Aligned with Gehenna and the Abyss instead of just Bator, make something similar to reassign the Aasimar, as the Ardling seems to be based on the Guardinal why not make it a true umbrella term with Aasimar being a lineage aligned with Elysium, an Archon-based lineage aligned with Mount Celestia, and an lineage (reflecting playtest 1's ardling) based on the Guardinals aligned with Arboria?
They seem like a clear call-back to the Guardinials that were big in 2e. If they lean into that angle I'm for it.. I think. I'm not crazy about animal headed pc's (felt the same way about Dragonborn) but if they can tie it to the NG Guardinials of Elysium, with some half-decent writing, I could get on board.

It shouldn't just be Guardinals though. Hound Archons (doglike) are from Celestia for instance, and Bariaurs (goatlike) are from Arborea. Guardinals have the most animalistic bipeds, but they don't have a monopoly
the one feature they had that was pretty cool was the climber could increase unarmed attacks . I hope they pass that part on to another race becuase I beleive they have canned the ardling.

I think WotC said that they shelved it, that might mean they could revisit it in the future or just have it go the way of any of a dozen other things from UA that nothing will happened with.

That, my friend is an absolutely stellar idea. You get to have your cake, and another one, and eat them too.
