It appears now that every level 4+ feat is a half feat, so with ASI becoming a feat it is very underwhelming to the utility you get from all these half-feat, even sentinel and PAM got the buff to half feat giving both a +1 and their near full effects of 5E.
I'd say ASI either needs a buff to increase 1 score by 2 AND 1 score by 1 or be removed in favor of a straight +1 at level 4, so that we get both a feat choice and a +1 ASI.
I'd prefer they split it off so you get both a feat and a ASI and feats don't give stats at all or yes just also give you a +1 if all feats are 1/2 feats, as I find the option to either customize by having feats not be 1/2 feats or get the ASI even worse. Everyone is going to want to get their primary to 20 and outside the previous editions damage builds people would basically ignore feats until they got their 20. This may reduce that a bit.So imo, this is slightly better than 5es system but it could use improvement.
To be fair, just getting both ASI and Feat is a stronger option, I get the feeling they are trying to keep some semblance of balance with 5E, which is the reason that didn't happen but it'd be better if perhaps it did go that way.
I see it as, just taking stats is boring. If the incentive to take an ability feat is a stat bonus so be it. Feats are fun, and should add variety.

It depends on you ability spread. If you start with an even number, the +1 from the half feat won’t do anything for you. The asi feat is guaranteed to get one and maybe two scores up high enough to change your bonus. It’s much the same as now, where it’s not as fun to pick the asi, and it doesn’t give you any new toys, but it will make you better and more reliable in more situations. It also still allows for a “no feat” playstyle.
Now I could see experienced players starting to make characters with an odd number in strategic locations, knowing they’ll take certain feats to round them up at level 4, though that happens now, considering there are already lots of half feats.
Shoot, why not give a +1 ASI every couple of levels mixed in with everything else and then save every 4th level for the feat selection. The ASI is on top of everything else but only a +1.
ASI is boring. Doesn't stop you from occasionally needing it. Sometimes you need to punch up those numbers, and ASI is how you do it.
Would be nice if they gave people more room to take feats, but I imagine them half-feating everything is how they're giving people room to take more feats. Ideal? No. But feats aren't as punitive to your statistical growth as they used to be, some classes/builds will be able to squeeze two or maybe even three where previously they had one or none.
It's also worth remembering that everybody gets two feats over and above what they used to get in the new system - one at first level and one at twentieth level. Yes, the twentieth-level feat is supposed to be an Epic Boon, but that doesn't mean it has to be. Even if I kinda find it hard to imagine taking a regular ASI or a lowbie feat over one of those bonkers-ass things.
This is also early days in the testing cycle. They may change their minds on all of this crap yet. Don't get married to any of it.

It's pretty much 1 extra feat cuse of the first level ones, not really 2. I kinda view it as everyones becoming variant human, but toned down variant human and now level 4 is coming with less of a power boost than it used to. I think overall my stance on the current playtest methodology is "meh" Feels like the current ideas are to just tone down player characters options
Many people claimed feat level benefits from the background features they took (some didn't pay attention at all to the feature) so I don't really see first level feats as an additional one but rather changing and redefining the ones we got. I hope some of the background features return rewritten as first level feats.
I also think 20th level feats/boons is basically so far beyond normal play that it's not really a feat but rather just encouraging capstone use before the game "ends"
I prefer feats over ASI anyway. I would rather be able to do something new, unique, or cool with another option than be marginally better at what I already do. I like the increased amount of half feats.
I'm definitely a feats > ASI guy. It is why I kind of like that all the feats at 4th level (and hopefully higher) give a +1. If you take two feats that can boost the same ASI you'd be keeping up somewhat in raw stats while also getting fun abilities.
Four feats in the same attribute would get you to 20 if you started at 16. Or you can take two feats and one ASI bonus. Or just pump stats early and grab two ASI boosts to get to 20 ASAP.
It's more flexible now I feel. I still feel it'd be even better if we didn't have to make the choice between feats and stat boosts, but this seems like an okay compromise.

Basically feat progress is really the same IMO
