Mostly, I am excited about the opportunity to agitate for the inclusion of more historically accurate armour types, along with an increase in the effectiveness of armour in general.
I also hope for a few much-needed nerfs to caster classes.
That's about it.
To hell with your historical accuracy! I'm putting little bits of metal in my leather and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

I'm distinctly hoping the 'School of Magic' subclasses go away entirely for wizards, or are condensed down into one 'Specialist' subclass. There does not need to be eight different separate wizard subclasses dealing with nothing but minor variations on spell theme.
Either this or just have your school of magic focus be a core Wizard feature. Sort of like the orders from Cleric. You choose the school of magic you specialize in and get bonuses to learning and using spells from that school. Then the sub-class is more about how you use your magic. Spellsword for a melee mage, a backline caster sub-class for the more traditional mage, etc. A sub-class built around being an experimental wizard could be fun. A bit like the Wild Magic sorcerer. Chaotic and unpredictable with a flavor revolving around discovering new applications for magic.

Except hit you with any piercing or bludgeoning weapon, because "studded leather armor" usually drawn by fantasy illustrators would grant zero protection. To actually protect from harm, leather armor had to be so thick and hard that it weighed as much as full metal plate armor...

So, you want historical accuracy in a game with magic and dragons and evil necromancers? And where a samurai can fight alongside a western gunslinger?

The eternal question here is, historically accurate to which period of history and which culture? And, not for nothing, the history of which planet in the D&D multiverse. Because whatever you answer, lots of the existing armor types just fall off the list.
I think it’s better to just let it be a game and keep things loose. The item names for armor and weapons are really just titles they hung on a set of game stats.
French privateering in the Gulf of Mexico: ended circa 1830
As many memes have pointed out, an adventuring party consisting of a Victorian gentleman thief, an Old West gunslinger, a disgraced former samurai, and an elderly French pirate is actually 100% historically plausible!

Okay, you got me.
Still doesn't make sense regarding dragons and magic, though. If you want historical accuracy, why are you playing D&D?

I guess a historically accurate setting, with historically accurate mythology and magic, would be fun. Not as the main setting for D&D, but it'd be fun to build. This is getting off-topic though hah.
Whilst I begrudge no one their seeking accuracy in history, I beg that such not be a requirement, for my world is so far from what could possibly be considered "earth" (in time and space) and has a completely different history that ultimately erases all of it as surely as the history of 15000 years ago here is erased.
However, it is *really* funny that I should say that since I spend a whole lot of time ensuring that everything in this brave new world is historically accurate to *its* history.
These are people who fought a war beside the Gods -- before there was magic. They sorta have a different view of things, lol.

Guys. No bagging on SCL. Yeah, historical armor in D&D is kind of a meme, but that doesn't mean he can't be excited to see if they make armor less of a pointless hassle in One, ne?

SteelClad_Lad is absolutely justified and has long ago earned (they were born) the right to seek greater historical accuracy options within the iterative update to 5e.
That is not said in jest or with sarcasm or anything: I mean it.

Absolutely. I just personally find it amusing (not in a mean way) that some people want historical accuracy in D&D. Personally, I've wanted to see some more unique historical weapons, like the bastard sword or zweihander.
Some changes are good. Not going to say nothing bad about those. On the other hand there are some changes that I don't like about the direction 6e is going. Like forcing you to choose between ASI or feats instead of just giving you both. Also how there are some bad nerfs for druids, paladins, bards, & rogues. It looks like they are trying to simplify it, but they are going overboard with the simplification. It sucks now that you can't combine spell smites with divine smites but at least you can now smite with a bow.
