Video on the new DMG. Haven’t had the time to watch the whole thing yet. Looks like they are trying to keep new DMs in mind with the formatting and info provided.
We'll have to wait and see the thing when it's out, I kind of having a hard time seeing it as a part of UA. I kinda hope they add genre-specific advice section, like how to run exploration/survival, horror, investigations, etc. How better to evoke the feelings that you want your players to experience: tension, dread, triumph, paranoia, thrill, righteous wrath...
No campaign settings in the DMG. I've had it up to here with the game's core materials *demanding* I set all my games in the Forgotten Realms and nowhere BUT the Forgotten Realms.
Anyways. Perkins coming as close as somebody who wants to keep collecting a paycheck can come to admitting the R5e DMG is a tire fire of piss-poor organization and layout combined with unintuitive writing and poor instructions for actually running a game. That's heartening to see, that the team knows how bad the book is and is taking active steps to un-bad it. Might actually be worth buying more than just the magic items a'la cart in the One DMG.

Well it could be something completely different and not a settling at all. We just don’t know. And I don’t think anyone is forcing you to play FR or any other setting. And WotC seems to be heading towards a setting free design with latest monsters etc with a lack of “setting” lore.
We don't know, no. We *do* know the new DMG will have a big chunk of text devoted to a "lore glossary" that will strictly and exclusively deal with Forgotten Realms lore. A fact which heavily disincentivizes anyone using the book to play in Exandria, or Eberron, or the Bellowing Wilds, or their own homebrew world, or anywhere else that their shiny new Lore Glossary doesn't apply to. Nope. GOTTA play in the Realms, because that's where the DMG says ya gotta play. Good luck getting your head around fifty years of back lore, because you'll need to understand the entire history of D&D from its very first printing just to run your first little minor adventure.

What are you talking about? The only time I've played in FR is when we played an officially published adventure module. The vast majority of games IME are in HB worlds.

God damnit.
Something to put in a survey, if they do a UA for the DMG. Or stick it in the final comments of any other survey, or every survey until the 2024 books come out.
I hadn’t gone through the whole video, listened on my way to work, and forgot about the glossary, so you do have a point.

I'd also love to have this kind of advice/guidance but I feel like anything but cursory suggestions would be too detailed for the DMG which is, by nature, a generalist book. I don't see them putting out a 500+ page core rulebook.
This kind of guidance seems suited for a supplement/later release (along the lines of VRGTR).

Organization: I agree that the 5E DMG's flow makes little sense, especially for new DMs. However, as someone who grew up playing 1E, I can tell you that even as-is, the 5E DMG feels incredibly well organized and easy to read. I love me some High Gygaxian but the 1E DMG is a supernova compared to the 5E DMG's tire fire. :D
And according to the video (just a few seconds into the 9 minute mark), the new DMG will contain a campaign as an example.

Oh lord yes. The 1e DMG was really just a collection of magazine articles mashed together with only the vaguest bit of editing. Swerving from detailed spell applications to overland travel rules, all the Appendixes of randomly generated junk, including Appendix J's list of Herb and Spices, the infamous Prostitute Encounter Table...
We don't know, no. We *do* know the new DMG will have a big chunk of text devoted to a "lore glossary" that will strictly and exclusively deal with Forgotten Realms lore.
Actually, their lore glossary doesn't seem to strictly be limited to FR lore -- it seems likely to be intended to answer things like "Who is Bigby's Hand named after?"
I’m wondering if the campaign will be set in some new generic world. Since he said they’re going to give examples of things as they explain them, and they’re almost certainly going to explain how to build a world, it would follow that they’ll include an example world they build as they go. It would probably be pretty bare bones, but at least not FR. Just something generic you can bend how you like. Then they have a place to put the campaign they’re going to develop.
My guess for the pullout map is either to go with that setting/campaign, or a map of the planes. Especially with this just a few months after planescape, so maybe they’ll settle on an official cosmology. The DMG would be the place to flesh that out, or at least explain it.
Based on his comments towards the end of the video I feel that the "new section" may be about mapping and a selection of generic maps for DMs to use. The type of maps that can be reused in various scenarios. He mentioned this as something he really wanted in the 2014 DMG but they just didn't have the budget or time to create them.

Well that's a bit unfair. I literally made an adventure in my homebrew setting by randomly rolling on tables in the DMG. Just added a little polish and it ended up great.
Only wishful thinking here dont hate, what about surprise Artificer class in it since its crafting heavy/magic item specific class to a degree?
Edit: they did race in DMG as example with Asimar before, so a surprise class is possible. Praying to the Pantheons for a miracle...
It would be a very appropriate place to include the Artificer...
But I'm expecting Artificer will likely be in whatever "_______ of Everything" book that ends up stashing all the Xanathar's and Tasha's content that doesn't get ported into the 2024 PHB.
I think the "surprise" might be more in the lines of the bastion system,Hex crawling, or adventure design. There's been talking about lack of tools supporting dms. So it's probably just dm tools that support various aspects of play rather than setting specific content.

I agree with your other points but I'd be very surprised if the Lore Glossary is FR-only. Perkins even specifically mentioned Zuggtmoy, who is a Greyhawk character.
I'd say it seems geared towards all the in-references and shibboleths that have accumulated in D&D over the years that keep popping up, e.g. characters like Mordenkainen, Tasha, Strahd, Van Richten etc. Some of those will surely be FR (e.g. Elminster and Volo) but not all.

I 100% agree that the 5e DMG is not the worst we've had. It definitely needs improvement though. How To Play The Damn Game should not be 8 chapters in.

They mentioned a surprise chapter and surprise included poster map. New campaign setting?

I had assumed the surprise chapter would be VTT stuff. Please, oh please, let it be a new campaign setting or something cool like that!
