Focus is certainly a good term, but since it is already used for Spellcasting Focus I do not find it so suitable.
I don't think anyone's likely to confuse the usages; 5th edition is riddled with words that are used for multiple purposes, "attack" being probably one of the worst (it has like three different mechanical meanings, and is used outside of these many, many times). Plus casting focuses are usually referred to as such ("spellcasting focus" rather than just "focus").

I still think spirit energy or ki is fine. I just disagree that just becuase it comes from an east Asian culture that it is offensive. this could be extended to barbarians and almost everything else in dnd if you really want to play that game.
Was surprised that this thread has gone on for 108 pages and nearly 2,200 replies (sure some were off topic etc). I searched and I don’t think the Warlock got over 1,500 replies.

Just goes to show how many people want to see a better monk. Hopefully that is similarly reflected in the UA monk feedback.🤞

I one hundred percent agree though I think why its hard to fix the monks is there are some monk fans who want them to remain weak I don't think any other class has nearly as many lol. like machoist/hipster monks .who would be mad if you made the monk a decent martial class with comparative dpr to the other martials (even if you are using resource) and more feat access .
but what people learned is a lot of people love the monk and you can really expand its fanbase just not the monk in 5e, the Baldur's gate 3 monk who actually can be strong and has a positive reception
Does anyone have any news about when 1DnD Playtest 8 is coming out?
Playtest 8? or Playtest 9?
I'm pretty sure Playtest document 8 was "Bastions and Cantrips." (Just like the first four playtest documents didn't say "Playtest 4" in the title, the way documents 5-7 did).

I think in the video they referred to it as a "bonus UA" but then the packet got labelled with the full numbered 8 release, so there was a little confusion there initially.

In the link it is not referred to as Playtest8 but simply "Bastions and Cantrips". While Player's Handbook Playtest1-7 refers to the Handbook and then only to the basic game book (classes, some subclasses, some feats, .. etc., simply basic game rules). Whereas "Bastions and Cantrips" is something beyond the basic rules of the game, so it cannot be called an HB. At least that's how I interpreted it.
Yeah, they went back (not sure when) and added “Player’s Handbook” to the beginning of playtests 1-7. But B&C is a DMG playtest so I guess it isn’t “Player’s Handbook Playtest 8” which may be reserved for the Monk revision playtest even though it’s the 9th UA.
While that's true, the fact that WotC went out of their way to change the name of a resource means that it was an issue that required their undivided attention and had to allocate their resources into that glaring problem that seemingly made people feel conflicted about using something so foreign to western culture...
I sometimes make jokes comparing these culture "issues" with Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! localization team, but I'm actually starting to think that they are trying to one-up them in this regard. What's next?, censoring every instance or reference to the word 'death'?, shortening 'black' into 'B' to avoid racism? turning guns into toys?, smoothing out the horns of demons?
Looks like the UA Brawler fighter subclass was not popular enough to make the cut. Too much confusion between that, monk and barbarian. Can't say i am surprised. It was a better at being a monk than the current monk is though.
Druid, barbarian and monk are the only ones coming back for another playtest. I think this will be the druid's third time around? If so, that gives me a bit more hope that if monk is not up to speed in the next UA playtest they could still bring it back again for some more tweaks.

This could be a problem, since the Brawler fighter subclass would have motivated WotC to create magical items for unarmed combat and thus also for the monk.

they said unarmed was going to get magic items specifically, not just because brawler exists

Hopefully it is as you say. However, I think that if a class as apreciated by the public as the fighter had entered the unarmed combat system it would have incentivized in the cration of new elements such as magic items and feats. Seeing how WotC works lately it seems very influenced on the interest of the public, and if there is little interest in unarmed combat I think it will not be developed much.

Focus points is what i told them to rename it to in my survey feedback

I’m hoping it’s today.

The monk almost universally is seen as needing work. The warlock is a great class and people are just complaining about the trim.

Focus or Essence works great as a resource name, but it is the least of the Monk's many, many issues.

I will believe in their follow-through (wrt to more magic items for unarmed combat) when I see their follow-through.
