Is all of my material purchased from DnDB going to be useless / no longer available?
What happens to all of the 5e mechanics? Does it just go away? I'm I going to find that spells, feats, etc for my characters are suddenly different?
I am running 2 campaigns. Am I going to need to take a pause and figure out the new stuff?
IMO, we should have a choice. I can see that new character/campaign creations would fall under new mechanics, but don't change what we've already built.
There have been no official announcements about purchases. Most of us speculate that the current core 3 will receive a “legacy” tag, similar to other content that’s been made obsolete. But that is just speculation.
As far as mechanics changes, there’s not likely to be any large ones. Some spells and feats will change, which ones you use will be up to you. Some classes will also have some tweaks. But bounded accuracy, which is really the mathematical root of this edition, isn’t going anywhere. The developers plan all along is for the new stuff to be backwards compatible, but we won’t know how well they pull it off until September.
Well, one thing that is pretty much certain is that they will not be updating your currently owned content for free; they're publishing new books and thus intend to sell them. Given the emphasis on backwards compatibility, it's extremely unlikely they'll be taking down adventure books or even the secondary source books. Most likely, the current PHB, MM, and DMG are just going to be put under the Legacy tag, the way VGtM and MToF were when MotM came out. If they follow that model, then anyone who already owns the content will continue to have access and be able to share it with the content sharing feature of a Master Subscription, they just won't be available for purchase going forward.
Also, if you want to make sure you have offline backups of your owned content, you can use the print function of web browsers to save PDF copies of the webpages.
They really need to figure out a better way to do this. Having multiple versions of every race, class, spell and magic item is going to be an absolute mess.
The Legacy tag sorts out the most current iterations of content, and theoretically all the power levels are going to remain within shouting distance of each other, so it shouldn't completely break the game to mix 2014 and 2024 elements.
I honestly hope they divide it out as if 5e and 5er/one are separate builds for characters. Some of the legacy labels really caused problems. (Wayfinder's guide content and monster stat dependent builds)
In our experience here the export to pdf doesn't always print all the information to the pdf and in some cases not at all. Especially if you are then printing it out. So it's always wise to check to make sure you have it all if you are backing up your characters.
I am hopeful that the option will be there but I will be backing up the important characters whose build I want to keep in case the option isn't there in the end.
