Am I the only one who wants a legitimate Myconid race in Unearthed Arcana? Like they're a pretty cool race and honestly I feel like some variant on them would make for a lovely player race.
I just took a look at these things in the monster manual, and while they would make very neat NPCs, I don't see these ever being adventures.
Perhaps some modified cousin of them would though. One that doesn't die in sunlight and can't raise the dead into an army of slaves (well not without spells anyway).
I agree with DxJxC. I doubt Myconids ever become official/playtest races for adventurers. However, if you really wanted one, you could create a Myconidkin race as he suggested, or just change the Monster Manual entry into a homebrew race as follows:
AbilityScoreIncrease. +1 Constitution, +1 (or +2 for PHB formula) Wisdom.
Alignment. Most myconids are lawful neutral.
Size. Your size is medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 20 ft.
Can’t Speak*. You are unable to speak, but are still able to read, write, and understand any languages which you know. You are unable to perform verbal spell components.
Fist. You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d4 bludgeoning damage on a hit.
PacificationSpores. You eject spores at one creature you can see within 5 feet of you. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be incapacitated for 1 minute. The DC of this saving throw is 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. After you use this ability, you can't use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
RapportSpores. As an action, you can spread spores which allow affected creatures to communicate telepathically. A 20-foot radius of spores extends from you. These spores can go around corners and affect only creatures with an Intelligence of 2 or higher that aren't undead, constructs, or elementals. Affected creatures can communicate telepathically with one another while they are within 30 feet of each other. The effect lasts for 1 hour. After you use this ability, you can't use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
Superior Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
SunSickness. While in sunlight, you have disadvantage on ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws. You die if you spend more than 1 hour in direct sunlight.
Languages. You know no languages.
Of course, if you do the Myconidkin route, you may want to give them at least common and maybe take out the Can't Speak trait lol and then maybe give them an option for either or spore instead of both.
So recently I was able to play a homebrew Myconid race that my DM signed off on. It was lots of fun and so when I came across this thread I decided to post here for anyone who might come across it later. (For those of you wondering, yes I did play a spore druid (can you really play anything else with this race?)).
Just so you all know, I took a lot of inspiration and copied parts of this GM Binder Myconid race: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LDJHDtETJ7Z916te-D6. It's a really good homebrew and I would definitely recommend looking at it if you plan on playing a Myconid in a campaign.
Here's what I made:
Ability Score Increase: Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.
Age: Myconids mature at around the age of three, and live about a quarter of a century.
Alignment: Most Myconids tend towards Lawful Neutral
Size: Myconids vary incredibly in size, which is determined by their age. Myconid Sprouts are about two feet tall and 3-4 years old. 10 year old Myconids are usually about 4 feet tall, and 20 year old Myconids can reach 5-6 feet tall. Very rarely, an Elder Myconid can survive to up to 50 years old, and reach up to 10-12 feet tall. Your size is Small when under the age of 10, otherwise your size is Medium.
Speed: Your base walking speed is 20 ft. (I chose 20 because that's the monster's speed in the MM, but if you want you can change it to 25 to match dwarves and gnomes or 30 to match most other races.)
Superior Darkvision: Myconids commonly live in dark and moist places, allowing you to have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Rapport Spores: As a Bonus Action, you may choose any number of creatures within 30 ft. of you to be infested with spores. You and any creatures affected by these spores can communicate telepathically when within 100 ft. of each other, provided you share a language. (This basically allows you to have a permanent skype call going with your entire group)
Fungal Form: You have advantage on saving throws against Poison, and resistance to Poison damage.
Toxic Pores: Whenever a melee attack using a natural weapon, unarmed strike, or any other attack that creates physical contact is made against you, you may use your reaction to deal 1d4 Poison damage do the attacker. This feature’s damage increases by 1d4 when you reach 5th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4), and 17th level (4d4).
Hybrid Nature: You have two creature types: Humanoid and Plant. You can be affected by an in game effect if it works on either of your creature types.
Sun Sickness: You have disadvantage on Attack Rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you or your target are in direct sunlight. Additionally, for every hour you spend in sunlight, you take 1d4+1 damage.
Languages: You can read and write Common and Sylvan, but are unable to speak them. You are still able to emit grunts, whistles, grumbles, hums, and other noises. These act as your verbal components for any spells that require them.

Anyone else want this too?

Well yeah I'm talking more of a cousin. Differing abilities and stats. Like the changes made to monstrous races to make them playable.
Also the sun death can be either reduced to just sensitivity like a drow or gotten rid of entirely.
I did a simple thing but I made it a substance of firbolg( which I had already reflavored into ents.) so far it is working well.
I let my player play one. We built as a substance of firbolg (which I had already reflavored into Ents)
Oh interesting!
Alright, time to necro this year old thread.

Here's what I made:
I think Team Four Star did a really good job at giving a reason for a Myconid to travel. They basically allowed him to "speak" using Report Spores.
Probably tasty sauteed in butter...
That would be amazing
I just started playing a game where I am a myconid barbarian and it is possibly my favorite character ever.
Can you share the homebrew species you're using? One of my players would be really interested in that, I think.
