Had a question about the reach property of a weapon. Using a weapon with the reach property extends the reach of an attacker, for example, using a halberd allows the attacker to attack a creature 10 feet away. Does it allow the user to attack a creature 10 feet away, if the adjacent square is occupied by another opponent. It seems like there should be a penalty for reaching over an occupied square. Or at least some guidelines, for example, if the adjacent square is occupied by a small creature, the attacker can reach over it to attack a medium or larger opponent. Anybody have any experience with this type of situation?
Our table rule is a 10ft reach weapon will allow an attack over an occupied square if the attacker is med or larger size and the one occupying the square in question is small or smaller.
I don’t believe it’s specifically called out in RAW. But to me it seems reasonable to use the cover rules. You can decide on the fly how those apply, like a halfling might give half cover to a Goliath, where a Goliath would give 3/4 to a halfling. Or just keep it simple and say it’s 1/2 cover (so a +2 to AC) all the time.

Thanks, that is helpful
