So we are starting a new campaign sunday, my DM allowed me to use the summoner homebrew we have, and he also allowed me to pick a rust monster! So my question is if you disarm a creature how do they attack? Like i get they can punch you... but rule wise do they use basic unarmed attack rules? or what?
need to know incase i manage to disarm a bandit or something.
In the case of a humanoid monster, especially one which uses a martial weapon or could otherwise be reasonably assumed to have one, I would generally rule that they have a backup dagger if they are disarmed. If disarmed of that dagger as well, I would use the standard 1+str damage unarmed strike.

Anything is edible if you try hard enough!
I am a swimmer. If you see me running, you should run too, because it means something horrible is chasing me.
I, personally, have ruled it that once you disarm a creature it takes them an action to rearm themselves with the weapon that you have disarmed them of (unless they have another weapon, then they can attack normally with that weapon). They can attack you with an unarmed attack, if they feel that would be benefitial or of they have a natural weapon of some kind. Or they can use their action for something else, like casting a spell, grappling/shoving you, or taking a help action for one of their allies.
So the answer is, they don't attack you if they have been disarmed.
But again, this will be highly dependent on your DM, please ask your DM how they would rule it if you plan on attempting to disarm people semiregularly.

That last part is very true. I cannot agree enough.

Thanks that helps a lot, never played a fighter and none of my groups have disarmed before so i am really shoddy on the mechanics for disarmed foes.
also yeah i always like to know rules as written so i can expect it then just let my DM change what they want obviously since that is the beauty of D&D!
ps playing both a dhampir and a summoner so this will be fun! He is a scholar who developed his own magic that is new to the world so he may be old but his magic is young explaining being level 1 lol. Also as a funny quirk i named him Sebas Solomon de Viktor Vivik von Vok the V (5th) and gave him the flaw of struggling to remember the names of others referring to them as uncreative nicknames (example being calling the warforged metal man) to get laughs out of them away from the table. Also i stashed an easter egg from my last campaign which is an NPC i made that a current player loved “Vivik Vok” who they went to for studying any occult items and saved from several... drunken situations lol.
That's the thing. There really isn't any RAW for disarming creatures. There are ways to do it, but there is a lot of deliberation on what happens if you are disarmed. Which is why i say to ask your DM on what they want to do, and be aware that it could change as the game goes out. ITs also always important to remember that if you are able to do something, the NPC's are also able to do it.
This is also one of the reasons I make sure that my characters all have multiple weapons equipped and listed. Unless I'm a monk, I'm not going in unarmed in a combat situation. You disarm me and I'm pulling out my second best weapon. If I get to daggers, I'll probably throw it at you and go for one of my weapons laying on the ground. Of course, more than half my characters are spellcasters anyway, so disarming me just removes the melee distraction and you'll get the full attention of some of my favorite spells.
yeah I plan to use a rapier and if i get disarmed i can bite thankfully, plus I may be a half caster but the tweaks my DM did with my homebrew class I get the eldritch blast cantrip!

I think it will depend very highly on the DM.

Thanks, yeah going to tell my DM who was talking with me on the subject so we can go from there since he is dealing with the same question
