So, I see you can group certain monsters together when making an encounter. I wanted the monsters to attack in waves, and thought this would be a good way to keep them separate, and add them in when it was their time. However, when I start the encounter, it just lumps all the monsters together, with no way to distinguish who is in what group.
So what's the point of grouping function? It seems to offer no use in encounters, or am I missing something?
The groupings should show up as individual groups when you first click Run and then Run Encounter (for example, 4 gnolls and 4 gnolls) as long as they don't have the same initiative, they will appear as separate groups of 4 in the tracker. While it is possible to add additional creatures to the encounter while it's running using the Manual Entry button, you will have to type in the basic information (ac, hp, movement, etc.) and it doesn't add creature stat blocks or details, so it's cumbersome to manage. My method of managing something like this would be to insure that each 'wave' has a unique initiative score and then ignore secondary, etc. waves each round until you want them to show up in the encounter. It's not ideal, but it's a possible workaround.
Cannot for the life of me figure out HOW to group these creatures. Clicking on them only brings up the details page and I see no button on the encounter building page to group them. I know this thread is ancient so I may as well hold my breath.

it groups them in terms of defining difficulty and figuring of XP. It is still your job as the DM to decide the placement and use of the monster.
