So, I am a DM, not read any Forgotten Realms stuff in years, stuck to mostly 1st edition stuff, we and my players have been in my campaign for over three years now playing once or twice a week.
It is weird, because despite not reading anything our major protagonists are similar to modern 5th ed modules...I don't want to say who for giving it away, but it is true.
I am at a point where I am having to chuck really nasty stuff at the players because 5th ed makes them super powerful compared to 1st ed. They have to be very switched on to avoid the really nasty stuff. Yes, I give them clues, but when they fail and ignore my hints, they get rekt.

1st ed would just kill them.
Anyone else?
Is your question whether or not this edition is less lethal than 1e? Then, yes, 5e is much less lethal than 1e.
Whether or not you like that really comes down to personal preference.
