hello im trying to build iver a curse warrior kind of build or a evil dragon knight kind of build both are magic/melee builds and im having a lot of trouble deciding race class etc any ideas
also figured i mention for both i want to hold my own in melee combat but have lots of magic so any ideas?? because I'm genuinely struggling
if you want more info then just ask
(im pretty sure this is the write forum to ask on right?)
also i can go slightly beyond the normal limits of the class because of a previous character build i hade but have begun to have serious second thought about was a death cleric and i was given free heavy Armor prociency also if you have other ideas you can tell me them to since im willing to play other character concepts it just these two sound the coolest to me so yeah pls give me some ideas thank you
1) Bladesinger: The most martial of the Wizard subclasses, can hold its own in melee and does have lots of magic, exactly as you requested. The only drawbacks might be that they don't wear anything heavier than light armor and do not use shields or two handed weapons, I'm not sure if that qualifies as a "Knight" in your view.
2) Eldritch Knight: A Fighter subclass with a little bit of Wizard magic. Certainly can hold their own in melee and can make magic a significant part of their repertoire, but cannot reach the most powerful spells and comes very late to even mid level spells. Definitely meets the aesthetics of a heavily armored, magic wielding Knight, it's even in the name.
3) Hexblade Warlock: A very good mix of magic and melee. Can wear medium armor and equip shields. Can also use the most powerful of spells, but is much more limited in the number of times they can cast them compared to a Wizard. I don't know if that counts as "lots" of magic.

well those are good ideas but I'm not sure if they really fit what im looking for you see for the cursed knight i want well a heavy armoured melee combatant who uses plenty of black magic witch means curses(witch would be the curse spell that i forgot the name of and evil sounding debuff spells that last more then a turn) necromancy and just negative magic in general and the evil dragon knight would be well also a heavy armoured melee character who uses elemental ( most likely fire) magic that's flavoured to be more evil and or sinister maybe the curse spell i forgot the name of and some curse like spells and the build would have a overall draconic theme im not sure how i could flavour the hex blade or blade singer like those and with the heavy Armor proficiency i could always ask the dm to give it to me for free as they've don it before but i don't want to push my luck ( i am not using eldritch knight because in my opinion it gives me to little magic) but anyway thanks for giving me the ideas but i don't think those would work also i should have probably mentioned this in the post but I'm not against multiclassing and i don't think my dm is against it either but id have to double check
thanks for the suggestion i have played around with the idea of a paladin in my head but it has the same problem with eldritch knight to little magic for me
You're going to have to compromise somewhere. I'd recommend a few levels of Paladin and the rest as a Sorceror. That will limit your melee capabilities but will get you your spell slots and a few dark spells. Or maybe a Cleric of some kind.
You're going to have to compromise on whether you want great spellcasting or great melee. Paladin is good at both, and is about as good a compromise as you'll get, in my opinion. you're not going to get a character that is great at both because they're meant to be options in contrast to each other. You pick one or the other.

thanks for the advice but i thought by the wording hold my own in combat would make most people assume as not being hot garbage in melee combat i geuse that wasn't as clear as i thought but the main idea at the star was to be decent at melee so im not completely stomped when i go swinging in melee combat not to excel just be decent in melee and excel in magic but thanks for the advice actually one of my ideas for the evil dragon knight build was 2 or 3 fighter levels and the rest draconic sorcerer but i ultimately dropped the idea
well those are good ideas but I'm not sure if they really fit what im looking for you see for the cursed knight i want well a heavy armoured melee combatant who uses plenty of black magic witch means curses(witch would be the curse spell that i forgot the name of and evil sounding debuff spells that last more then a turn) necromancy and just negative magic in general and the evil dragon knight would be well also a heavy armoured melee character who uses elemental ( most likely fire) magic that's flavoured to be more evil and or sinister maybe the curse spell i forgot the name of and some curse like spells and the build would have a overall draconic theme im not sure how i could flavour the hex blade or blade singer like those and with the heavy Armor proficiency i could always ask the dm to give it to me for free as they've don it before but i don't want to push my luck ( i am not using eldritch knight because in my opinion it gives me to little magic) but anyway thanks for giving me the ideas but i don't think those would work also i should have probably mentioned this in the post but I'm not against multiclassing and i don't think my dm is against it either but id have to double check
Hexblade is almost perfect then, it casts curses (Hexblade's Curse is a subclass feature, and Hex is an iconic warlock curse), it wears medium armor, which can be pretty bulky and intimidating, and Dragonborn is a good lineage to pick, with the Charisma bonus so you have your dragon angle. All you would need to do is pick up the Heavily Armored Feat along the way and you've got your Dark Dragon Knight.

Thank you but I checked the warlock spell list and there didn't seem to be that many elemental spells so that ends up restrict my characters ability to well use fire magic so do you have any multiclass suggestions to get around that maybe sorcerer or something else? Because I don't think pure hex blade would work cause the mine idea fore the edk build was to run into melee combat debuff some of the stronger enemies with curses and then Increase my damage output with use of fire magic and some other utility spells here and there actually hexblade/draconic sorcerer could work for what I want but I'm not sure about the level split so any ideas for the level split or better suggestions because from what I've gathered the game should be ending at level 10 so any ideas?
I mean to be fair to everyone trying to help in this thread your request is slightly unrealistic in a game thats supposed to be 'balanced', you're basically asking "How can I be a full spellcaster, while also being a really good melee fighter, who can also wear heavy armour and also cast a wide variety of both elemental and dark magic style spells".
The Hexblade is the closest to what you want and if your DM allowed, you could switch out the free Cone of Cold subclass spell for something like Fire Ball (Or just an elemental type tweak to Cone of Fire) and Wrathful Smite for Searing Smite, then your character will have access to Green-Flame Blade, Searing Smite, Elemental Weapon (Fire), Fireball or Cone of Fire, Hellish Rebuke and Investiture of Fire with a few other thematically firey if not damagingly firey spells available which is a decent handful of elemental spells to have access to especially given these spells are fighting for action economy alongside presumably wanting to fight in close quarters AND curse people.
The other option is your Fighter/Sorcerer Multiclass that you gave up on that would mostly serve the function you want.
when did i mention being a full caster i just want to excel at magic i fully expected and still expect to be weaker in the magic department then a full caster and i never said a really good melee fight i just wanted to be good enough where in melee combat i wont get destroyed again i expect to be out classed in melee combat all i want is to build a cool character concept while being somewhat effect mechanically so i wont be comptly eclipsed at least in the magic department sorry if this sounded rude but i fail to see how i said i want to be a full caster who is really good at melee to be honest when i opened this thread i expected mostly mediocre but still fun to play gish multiclass builds

Ahh, didn't realize fire was that important. If you make them a Red Dragonborn, they will be able to breathe fire and be temporarily immune to fire. From the Warlock spell list you have Green Flame Blade (strike with a flaming blade), Hellish Rebuke (react with fire when someone hits you) Create Bonfire (summon up an area of fire) Elemental Bane (make things more vulnerable to fire damage) and Investiture of Flame (set yourself on fire, burn things near you, shoot a line of flame). You could have Burning Hands, Scorching Ray, Fireball, Fire Shield, and Wall of Fire if you went Fiend Patron instead, but you'd lose Medium Armor and Shield proficiency.
Sure, I suppose you could multiclass Draconic Sorcerer, but I think being a Red Dragonborn would get you a lot of the dragon flavor and I don't think being a Sorcerer brings very much to your concept, honestly. You'd be more frail and the benefits of the Draconic subclass wouldn't help since Hexblade already gives you better armor proficiency and being a Red Dragonborn already gives you fire resistance and fire breath.

oh ok thanks il take that into consideration :) because i still have time before the campaign starts so i can use the advice from here to help me with my character :)
You may not think you're asking for a lot, but you want: melee + spells + heavy armor + curses + fire!
That's quite a spread, especially for under 10 levels. I think multiclassing would be a little difficult with this kind of budget. Using Feats would be better. You can pick up heavy armor with a Feat or you could pick up a bit more fire magic, but I think the fire breath from chromatic dragonborn works decently well.
Were you planning on using a one handed weapon and a shield? Because that poses some difficulty for casting spells like Hellish Rebuke, since it needs a hand free. The War Caster Feat is almost essential for gish builds.

well when you say it like this it does seem like a bit much also i was just going to use a longsword or war axe no shield the heavy armor was going to be my main source of protection i think it might be better to look into one of the more less fleshed out builds that are chilling in my head also thank you you have been very helpful in this thread :)

Actually going two handed is kind of better for casting, because you only need to hands on the weapon when you're actually attacking, otherwise it is free for casting. Once you get to 3rd level you can manifest a +1 Greatsword, which is a heavy two hander AND you can wield it with your Charisma instead of Strength. Then at level 4 you can pick up the Heavily Armored Feat. What you want is definitely possible. Oh! I just noticed that Hexblades get Elemental Weapon at level 5 so that's when you can set your sword ablaze and be swinging a Fiery +1 Greatsword!

Just remember that at levels 1 and 2 you will want to use a longsword, which is a versatile weapon, since your Hex Warrior ability won't work with a two hander, not until you get to level 3 and get your Pact of the Blade option, as well as the Improved Pact Weapon Invocation. Then you can summon your +1 Greatsword out of thin air.

"Cursed knight" to me sounds like a paladin to an evil/chaotic order/diety. Something like Conquest or Vengeance could work.
