I was making some homebrew items for a Transmutation specialist wizard character - specifically, I made a set of "Transmuter's Stone" wondrous items. Each of them has one of the traits that the stone is capable of giving (darkvision, the various resistances, 10' speed increase, con save proficiency).
What I would like to do is to know how to make each of these stones "mutually exclusive" of each other? I wasn't able to find a way to do that. For the record my goal is to make It so you can have only one of the possible effects on a given stone (rather than having all of them active at once). Is there a better way to do that with all of the modifiers on a single item?
There's no way to define an item's interaction with another item using the modifiers - the best way to do this is to just note the restrictions in the description, or perhaps make it so that the item needs attunement and have a restriction on the attunement.
If it’s a situation where once you choose the effect is permanent, then you can do what Deo said and make one item for each of the effects. This is how +1 items are done in DDB.
If it’s something where they can change it, then the easiest way to make this happen and still show the effect on their sheet is to make multiple items like above and use Stormknight’s idea of attunement to have the modifiers take effect.
Without attunement, I believe the modifiers take effect the moment they put the item in their inventory. I don’t think using the item is required to get the benefits, unfortunately.
All this said, I think having a choice would be a nice feature request. People have asked for this for spell scrolls for some time. The more people speak up about an idea, the more likely the devs will consider it. If it’s a niche issue, it understandably has to go on the backburner.
At the moment I have a total of 8 of the stones created, each with a single possible effect from the list the transmuter can choose from. I found they can be in the inventory at the same time and not take effect (at least the way I created them) until the character has the item marked as "use". I didn't use attunement, because I'd hate to prevent someone from using an attunement slot for a class feature instead. As long as only one is selected as "use" at a time, there's no problem and only that single effect is applied to the character - I was just hoping I was missing something as far as being able to say "if you use this item, you can't use these other items".
I think that I may request this feature for magic items (because a concept like a pair of magic weapons that will absolutely not allow themselves to work together for the same character seems like a decent concept, in addition to this type of workaround for the class feature) regardless - but I may also request that this class feature be added to the character sheet for wizards with this specialty chosen too - seems like if you have an item that can be created by a class feature that gives you stats, that should be reflected on the sheet.

Thanks for the responses :)
Thanks for the info about non-attuned items, that’s good to know. I have used attunement in the past as a means of adding the effect with the understanding that it didn’t really take up a slot, so it’s good to know I don’t need to do this anymore.
As for class features, it would be cool to be able to click a button to create items, like the Artificer or the Forge Domain Cleric. This is probably low on the list, but it’s always better to put it out there so they can see it.

Hello,

Any insight/assistance appreciated.
you can update the stone after a player tells you what he or she likes to have for mod.
You ask: Are you dutch? i ask you to roll and you hit a natural 20 ;)
