Yes, a creature can be anything the DM wants it to be. You can have evil unicorns and good vampires, whatever you want. It's your world.
Wholeheartedly agree.
I would like to iterate that some DM's will also find quirks to racial alignments especially flavorful in a lot of cases, in the event that the world is not your own. When it comes to managing what would normally be an NPC Monster as a PC Race there is even more imaginative and creative variations to expound on. Expressing these ideas is beneficial to the group on an informational level as well, if even only to bring more experience to the table in the future.
Any creature with free will can choose its own way in life. Even those you might not think of being able to ... angels can fall, demons can rise, after all.
I recall in the Elder Scrolls, you could find a note on the corpse of a troll. The troll had jumped in the river and drowned itself because it was distraught at not having been scary enough to extort money out of travelers passing the bridge. I could imagine such a troll having been pushed into this line of trade by family, but otherwise wanting nothing to do with the evil troll life.
I was wondering, is it possible for a troll to be good, or even neutral? Thanks for the responses in advance!

The more interesting question would be how would being good affect the Troll's life?
What relationships does it have with other good creatures?
Does it get left alone or does it interact with them?
How does it react when it is run out of it's cave close to civilisation because "AH **** A TROLL!!! GRAB YOUR PITCH FORKS!"
Haha....Shrek. xD
