Is it just me that think the extra stats, are now tied to backgrounds instead species, ridiculous. So instead of picking a specific species for stats, you now have to pick a specific background. And didn't he say in the video there was 16. That is very low compared to what we have now. You can go to some workplaces, and find people with a more diverce background, than that. Plus with the changes they made to the extra stats, people could place them as they wanted. He said it was more flexible than before. I assume he ment to what was in the UA, because it doesn't sound very flexible. I'm currently playing a half-elf warlock. +2 to charisma, but then i could place the 2 +1's how ever I wanted. I placed 1 in con, and 1 in dex. Would I even be able to do something similar, with the limited choises in the new edition. Would that background even be fitting for my character. When I hear their solution, I highly doubt their claim, that they play DnD. I saw one in the comment section say they should have tied it to the class. Another said just add them to the point buy system (or you could just add them to the rolls, if you decide to roll stats). Both solutions sounds better, than what sound like, they have spend a lot of time working on. I'm actually curious about the like/dislike ration on that video
I am not exactly happy that they altered Backgrounds from what was presented in the UA, but I much prefer Backgrounds as presented in the latest videos to what was in the 2014 PHB. I think (hope) that the rules in the DMG for customizing Backgrounds will basically be the same as what we saw in the UA.
Honestly if they’re taking a step back to preset stats on backgrounds after the UA made it all wildcards, that’s a really bad fumble on their part. People are already pretty used to picking their character creation ASI spread anymore, and tying starting feats to particular ability and proficiency combinations just makes them less effective at diversifying builds. Hopefully they have the sense to include the build your own rules in the PHB as a variant.
Not exactly - each background gives you 3 stats you can adjust. Then you select whether to +1 in all 3 or go +2/+1/+0 and de dew stats get te +2 ad 0. Given that tree are 6 stats ad 16 backgrounds there should be plenty of overlap for customization.
Are they at least still doing some roleplay prompt tables? Because otherwise, there’s honestly not much reason to use backgrounds as discreet features rather than just example templates now that they’re dropping the soft background features, imo.
No you can't, unless the DM allows it, and you look in the DM book. You have 3 stats to chose from. The gave an example which I recall had, Wisdom, intelligence and Charisma
This opens up the floor for 3rd party creators to create certain backgrounds or can provide a template to convert previously published backgrounds to fit in with the updated rules.
From what I can find on Google, you will 20 different combinations, to get all of them. Then add in the other things they give, plus does the background even fit your character
The custom background was moved to the DMG as an optional rule.
The new backgrounds will have 3 ability scores and you may choose your +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1 starting ASI among those 3 only. They also provide the usual proficiencies like they currently do and will provide a specific 'Origin feat' relevant to it.
The limited ASI thing is going to be ignored by most. It was such a common houserule long before Tasha's was ever printed so (and similar houserules existed for previous editions), it's just gonna get made back into a houserule right away. And custom backgrounds will still be done, even before DMG releases, because players in general prefer creativity over baseless restriction.
It's not a concern.

To be fair, some us play AL, so I still want to hear how they plan to handle the custom rule. I totally agree that my DM in my casual playgroup won't be a problem (or me when that's me.)
Skills: Medicine and Religion Skills: History and Persuasion
Tool Tool: Choose one kind of Gaming Set
Every background comes with a small list of equipment which you can choose to take with some leftover gold or you can forgo that and just take the full 50 g.
The blurb for the new PHB on Amazon only has 16 backgrounds, while I’ve read 20 in some of the comments here. Do we have an official number? Do we have a list of them? (There were 18 sample backgrounds in UA1.)

If I were a betting man noble's third would be charisma.

Agreed, also Hermit's tool has to be a Healer's Kit so they can make use of their feat. I think it was and I just forgot to write it down.
Something of note, if they kept the Human ability to pick an origin feat with these backgrounds all having specific feats it makes human a little bit more versatile and a very good race to pick again. I am also curious if they will let us do +3 in a stat, I am going to a assume no. Something else I noticed is these ones that we see here all have at least 1 physical stat or one mental stat. I am honestly expecting that to carry over. I am hoping Acolyte isn't going to be int, wis, cha as we have speculated but wis, cha and either strength or constitution and than the feat would be MI (Cleric) with the religion and insight skill and maybe 1 set of artisan tools.
I also suspect that the ones where we had Criminal/spy will get spit into 2 different backgrounds with similar skills but different feats or a different asi.
For example, the Knight will likely have the same ASI and skills as the noble but its Feat may be toughness instead of skilled.

You get two options. +1/+1/+1 or +1/+2. you can assign them wherever you want. Akin to the newer races that've come out post Tasha's.
Just tied to background instead of species/race/ancestry.

Background Information I could glean from pausing the official short when it panned over the background section of the new book:
Hermit Noble Sage
Ability Scores Con, Wis, Cha Ability Scores Str, Int, ? Ability Scores Con, Int, Wis
Feat: Healer Feat: Skilled Feat: Magic Initiate (Wizard)
Skills: Medicine and Religion Skills: History and Persuasion
Tool Tool: Choose one kind of Gaming Set

I just hope I can find one that’s identifiable to my character. My current one is a Celebrity Adventurer Scion.
