Hello everyone! I am GMing a group that uses the "spell points" variant, from the DMG. And I wanted to create a Wizard subclass that grants the character extra spell points (and nothing else). So instead of having 17 spell points on level 4, he would instead have 23, or something. But how do I figure out how to make this balanced compared to the other Wizard subclasses?

the balance is easy a extra spell point per level would not hurt to much (heck you could even throw in a extra 2 every time they would get a feature)
the problem is that it would be really, really bland

Maybe to make it less bland, the wizard could gain access to other magical abilities that draw on spell points as well, so they have more they can do with the extra. Like, maybe give them access to a limited number of sorcerer metamagic options and use spell points for the cost (not sure what a balanced conversion would be). Or maybe even move away from spell enhancements and come up with other wonderous things. Maybe they could spend spell points to reduce time/cost of copying spells. Maybe they could spend spell points to temporarily draw from another class' spell list. Maybe they could spend spell points for some sort of "Arcane Smite" on weapon attacks. The possibilities are endless.

This takes away from other classes. Making additional abilities that use points is pretty much copying sorcery points (literally what is happening here), and you are also coming up with things along the lines of eldritch invocations. No modifying spells in that way. While I am sure you can come up with interesting ways to use the points, DON'T COPY OTHER CLASSES. If you want to use points to modify spells play sorcerer. If you want to eldritch smite, play a warlock. Play the classes that were specifically made to benefit from these features. The possibilities are endless, so make something new.

Im just spitballing ideas. There are plenty of existing class features, spells, invocations, etc that step on the toes of other class features (Eldritch Smite is an example of this as its a copy of the Divine Smite feature, but changed slightly for warlocks). I'm not suggesting just do a 1-to-1 copy of abilites, I am saying you could do something similar but with the same sort of slight modifications to make it less powerful than the original and/or more thematically/mechanically fitting to wizards.
