I wanna spitball some ideas and need to know how they sound. I am currently creating a world, which I'm hoping to put together as a type of source book for a custom world, and want to throw some ideas around and maybe get some great ideas from you. These are Ideas that Travis_Legge and I have come up with so far.
Humans are still in a tribal form, think Dothraki in GoT, and have 7 tribed, the tribes are based off of elements with different tribes giving the humans different proficiency in a different skill, Eath=Athletics, Air=Acrobatics, ect. They worship a being known as The Father, and The Father has two daughters known as Archons. These daughters are born from one of seven oracles from the seven tribes and depending on which daughter reaches the appropriate age to become an Archon, the current Archons get replaced. They inherit a power at maturity and lose it once another daughter reaches their maturity, so a daughter could be an Archon for a couple of minutes before having her power taken away. I would like to think that the tribes treat all Oracles with the greatest respect and love every Future and Past Archon. There can be a tribal citadel, like in Game of Thrones with the Dothraki and their Vaes Dothrak. A city where no one can fight, and that's where the Oracles and Archons live.
Now I want to go with an Elemental name system for the 7 tribes, but i don't want to be too generic, like Earth Tribe, and Air tribe, but I want the same idea. Should i just use synonyms, or come up with something else?
When it comes to the elves they were born from separating themselves from the Orcs of this world. Orcs are druids that have been born from nature itself and sees themselves as equals with nature and helps preserve it, while Elves came about from Orcs that have begun to worship nature and the elements of nature; water, air, fire, and earth, (I don't want to use the same names for these elves and the human tribes) thus creating 4 different sub-races for elves, of course I will be looking at the UA that has been released for elves, but tweak them as i see fit.
For the Orcs, my thoughts are, they are Driuds, so they worship the balance of all things in the natural order. To place one element above the rest is against their beliefs. They seek the elements in harmony. Its possible that because of the elven heresy, elemental magic, even druidic magic, is frowned upon by orcs.
Dragonborns, in their mythology, are the chosen children of the Dragons who created the universe. They must stand guard over the promised land until the Great Wyrm returns (or some such) they are not evil, and even sometimes very benevolent, but are fanatical in their protection of the land.
We are still working on some of the races, but hopefully we will get enough to try a one-shot soon just to build more of the world.
I like it! I'm confused by the Archon thing. Are the two daughters co Archons? Are they actually The Father's children? If not how do the tribes know a child is an Archon? If so, there's not much secret then, I wouldn't be surprised if "The Father visited my tribe and that makes us rightful rulers." was said every time. How often does an Archon come about, once every generation?
Seven is a bad number in D&D; things just don't come in sevens. 8 tribes means two for every plane or one for every school of magic. 12 tribes means one for every outer plane. Really, go for a multiple of four. For your elf subraces, look at genasi subraces for inspiration.

The Archons are his daughters from the 7 oracles. Archons, at the age of maturity, inherit power from The Father, being able to heal the sick or even destroy villages. There can be only 2 Archons at any one time, so depending on how many daughters The Father has at one time, a daughter can be an Archon from a couple minutes to years. Archons, even after they lose their powers, are treated with the utmost respect by all tribes and are seen as being part of The Father.
I know it seems a little confusing, but this is how we get Asamar and TIeflings, they are children from past or current Archons either born from a pure daughter or born from a corrupt daughter.

The Archons have verifiable supernatural powers. Difficult (though maybe not impossible...) to falsify. This helps prevent the rise of false prophets.

Definitely something to consider. Thanks much! Genasi are actually going to be replacing half-elves in this world. Each elven subrace will have some signature connection with their element, but we will begin building out from existing subraces (sea elves, drow, avariel, etc.) and re-skinning them to skew more elemental.
One question still remains: Are they actually his children? Is The Father an actual being? Doe he demand worship, or has he just excepted these people's worship of him?

I will like to say yes, The Father is a being almost like Ego the Living Planet, he exists but not on a physical plane, he is able to manifest himself in children he produces with Oracles from the tribes. The daughters are really his, they have part of his being in them, they are demi-gods to put it bluntly. He doesn't demand worship, but the human tribes see him as a being to worship.
Heavy elemental influences are at play, divine is present but more distant. Still working out the specific "hook" for adventurers. We are painting the backdrop at this point.

To this point, most of the struggle in this world would come from Archons and their power struggle. This might be good for, ehh, one or two adventures before tiring.
It also appears that some classes and some subclasses wouldn't exist here. Clerics and paladins would be more unlikely and wizards and most rogue subclasses would be nonexistent due to them relying heavily on civilization to flourish.

The archons themselves don't have much of a power struggle, though there is the struggle between the shunned/exiled former archons and the "proper" faith.
There's a LOT of lore about maintaining elemental balance, so obviously there will be lots of room to work there.
The dragonborn have agendas that we are only beginning to sketch out.
Still building the skeleton. Not sure where it's gonna need more meat.
The tribes aren't peaceful towards each other all the time either. Only win it comes to Archons and Oracles are they like minded. Tribes fight all the time, for power and control of the land.
And there are humans outside of tribes that act like more traditional orcs in fantasy world's, raiding small towns and causing trouble.

So, you have humans, assorted elves, hippie orcs, and a wide variety of half-breeds. What else do you have?
