So I have this idea about maybe a bladesinger that uses shadowblade as his main weapon. But I thought it might be neat if some how every time he summoned it, it was a random weapon and used part of the random weapons stats/ damage die. IE, instead of 2D8 normal. You roll and get a whip or shortsword and use D4's or D6's maybe not 2 of each as that would be a straight up nerf.
I would like to to be more frequent that every time it was cast it was chosen, but instead be maybe before every attack it changed.
Does this seem possible or to difficult? I would think a work around for STR/DEX requirements/damage would have to be made.
I think the randomness could be cool if sometimes it was a huge payoff and others a comical disappointment.
But I assume 2dweapon would stay fair, but then I'd also make the weapon casted gain none of the extra benefits it would normally gain from the casting - meaning no light/thrown, except the weapon already has such a thing, making it so you could go from a dart/dagger with a 2d4, to longswords/rapiers with 2d8/2d10, to maybe a greataxe (2d12) or a greatsword (3d6). Maybe keeping the thrown part would be cool (chucks greataxe) but otherwise, being a bladesinger with a sudden 2d12 (or more if upcast) on one hand and with a 60 ft. total range could be kind of a kek.
Right I feel this could be incredibly hilarious to play.
I guess I also assumed no throwing "large weapons" unless maybe you imposed disadvantage. but things like darts I would still consider okay to throw normally should you roll it.
But going from like a greataxe attack feeling amazing then rolling a blowgun/dart on the next. Maybe making the whole "weapon cluster" sentient and have some banter with the "weapon". Arguing with weapon roll to receive a weapon and get a small stick aka "club" or roll a soft pair of gloves "unarmed".
I also guess warlock with pactweapon would be another option to try and homebrew this maybe. But Bladesinger would be my go to if I had a choice.
Imo, what if it worked like a Shadow Blade spell variant - but for all the classes that could have this spell? Like imagine this was to Shadow Blade what Jim's Magic Missiles is to the og - less reliable, but with possible win/win scenarios.
Like, have a table with like
1d12
1 - Dart (1)
2/3 - Dagger (d4)
4/5 - Shortsword (d6)
6/7 - Rapier/Scimitar (d8)
8 - Double Scimitar (2d4)
9/10 - Longsword (d10)
11 - Greatsword (2d6)
12 - Greataxe (d12)
And call it, uhhh, Joker's Shadow Blade or anything that gives the impression that its so quirky it would be a hell of a mess to even code on beyond, let just have it come around to a table as someone sees you summon a shadow dart - but if you wanted a different weapon, you'd probably need to either recast, or make an upcast feature to use the ba for retrieving weapon to rerandomize again - but with this randomness, even if you drop light - maybe keeping thrown would work for funny situations.
So drop heavy, light, and two-handed, as well as assume everything has finesse?
drop the light part from Shadow Blade unless the weapon itself has light, and then keep every possible trait a weapon would have - but add it thrown - finesse on all would mean greataxe half-orc rogue - and that is not funny, unless it is
I'm not sure that would work. If its for a bladesinger you cant use attacks with 2 hands. On antoher note would you then have to have str/dex/int and con?

Although you could not be on bladesinging on that moment - do note that as said previously this could be a spell by itself, meaning it wouldn't need to be locked into bladesingers.
Additionally - count that, iirc, high bladesingers get to use Int for attacks, while otherwise, you'd simply be working on Dex around if you didn't get to that point.

Any input would be awesome. Thanks guys/girls.
casts Shadow Blade - rolls Dart :^)
