Hello with fizban's being out now for a while (I wanted to post this when it came out but couldn't due to work) i have tried to make scale mail armour of the chromatic and Metallic Wyrm's updating the normal dragon scale mail and try to make it more useful I'm currently working on the white and then metallic's
the links are to the homebrew any feedback would be appreciated many thanks in advance Legion4
I looked at the first item and my thoughts are as follows;
1) Ask why and how some of the abilities function, ie how does the armor know your allies from foes so the area damage ignores them. In general I do not like this type of "game thought" as it breaks my game illusion barrier (ie it makes sense in video games but not so much if you play in a more realistic setting).
2) In other games I have seen items made from specific materials have unique abilities based on what they are enchanted with, so the area poison ability would require an enchantment by a spell that did poison in an area and then modified by the unique material in question.
3) in general when reading homebrew items having each ability and or power in its own paragraph is very helpful so I can see quickly how many powers it has, where one ability breaks from another and other things.
In general I think the item is very powerful and depending on your game and play style it may need some work.
It's a very strong item, and I'd say it's too confusing to have so many different abilities on one item. It's a Legendary item, so that's for character level 17+, which seems a bit over the top for what is essentially armour made from dragon scales.
Why don't dragons have all these benefits and abilities, given that it's just made from their scales?
I'd make it a +1 Scale Mail that provides resistance to the relevant damage type.

I would like to reply to your comment on dragon scales and the number of abilities abilities, in general many games have in the past used the age of the dragon in question as a reason why their scales were more magical and when enchanted with some basic spells developed additional abilities. So a young dragons scales if enchanted with +1 AC would gain nothing else but an elder dragon scales enchanted with +1 AC would also gain a bonus to saves or reduction to damage based on the type of dragon.
I have seen lots of variations in game systems and even settings within game systems so powers/abilities of items can vary greatly. Also I tend to see games in which GM's do not like magic items tend to be significantly more generic in magic items unless they are based on a Greek Mythology or artifact type game world.
