I want to let my players be able to learn feats, as a way to let them actively progress their character outside of levelling up, as i usually use goals rather than xp.
Ive seen and read many posts and forums all over the internet, but still haven't come to a concensus im happy with. And so i thought i'd ask the question myself.
The different ways to learn a feat that ive seen have mostly been downtime, but that comes with many cons such as it costs the players nothing to just take time off as down time and then say theyve learnt 3 tools or something. I personally preffer yo have it as only allowed to work for in in game downtime. Such as during a long rest, for 2 hours extra (which could be bad for the players), they can work towards the feats, and have to say how they would be working towards it for example. I personally would like to Perhaps also have a dc every hour to see if they successfully work towards the skill, maybe with better roles subtracting time, and worse rolls adding time.
So could anyone help me maybe figure out a reasonable balance, that makes it workable, but not to easy, and also fair.
Also i think that maybe, to let their be the ability to have it as a level 20 thing so theres way to progress at that point, perhaps the maximum amount allowed is equal to your int modifier, int modifier + 1, or int modifier with a minimum of 1. Until level 20.
