So I've been working on a world and a major part of the lore was that at some point a race of dragons decided to manipulate their forms to be more human like. The short of it is that unlike dragon born this group Are a bit closer to humans (or I guess Tieflings since they retain their horns) but that they can release their latent draconic form over time. The idea was that as they mature they can release the dragon form. I was originally think this would be a race but some of what I want to do for balancing seems like it would fit better as a class because I also wanted to give them some accesses to some laten magic as well because of their history.
I wrote up the first draft in the documents I could try and share here as well If I could pick your brains about it but this is my first time sharing stuff on here so I'm not entirely sure on procedure.
There's already a draconic subclass for Sorcerer, and that seems to be basically what you're describing. Is there any reason that that wouldn't work?

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

I actually hadn't known that was a thing. But while a build like that would be fine as singular character I wanted to a build a whole race for the lore of my story. I think I've figured out the balancing after thinking about it and ultimately I just had to make them not a catch all. Which tends to be my issue
Why not just use the aforementioned dragonborn and modify the lore a little? Homebrew is all well and good, but a quick reskin can achieve the same effect with only a fraction of the work.
I guess it comes down to this question: would ”releasing their draconic form over time” manifest as more of a cosmetic feature, or does it give them unique abilities? If it’s only for show, there’s no need to homebrew an entirely new race/class. But if not, I’d be happy to help brainstorm.
As for the draft, go ahead and share! There aren’t any restrictions on that sort of thing.

Thanks in advance.
