Now I haven't tried my hand at DMing in years so I'm still a super noob at it. Over the years however, I have been building a list in my mind of homebrew and alternate rules I would like to implement whenever I try my hand at being a Dungeon Master again. So, any opinions and ideas from whomever reads this is welcome.
I plan on using the spell points system for my players. This system is a variant rule located in the DMG (and hopefully in the 2024 DMG, also). However, I want to implement a way for the players to be able to get these points back more often than justa long rest. My inspiration is from the plethora of video games that allow the replenishing of MP.
The two ideas I had for the rules are as follows:
1) As a part of what I had in mind, I was thinking that during short rests players could sacrifice a hit die if need be, to gain a certain number of spell points. The amount that would be gained per hit die used would be a 1/4 of the max number of spell points.
2) There would also be potions for spell points. My original thought was that potions for spell points would just give one quarter max points, then go up a quarter every grade up, i.e. greater, supreme, etc.
Instead, I think the rules for how HP is rolled for potions should work just as well for spell points.
This is all I have for ideas on this topic. Again, any opinions, ideas, suggestions are welcome and would be greatly appreciated.
I dislike sacrificing HD to gain spell points during a rest. If anything, that should be something only doable during combat, not when they have a chance to heal up. from their cleric friends
I like the idea of potions. Classic blue potions to go along with the red healing ones.
I would also suggest a spell that drains others of their spell points - costing them more than the spell costs to cast.

Yeah, the hit die thing was iffy in my head.
I like the spell idea. Like a damaging spell for the spell points instead of the hit points.
