So, at some point I wondered if I could attempt and work my way (after some trial and error) and make a homebrew spell, and, although I'm not fully convinced, I'd like to see anyone's opinions here.
I'll have to come back later to do a more in depth review of this, but here's what I came up with on a first glance;
I'd probably either swap the damage dice or have them both at d6s. To me it just makes sense that the initial blast has the higher die or at least is an additive of the area damage.
the "rolling at disadvantage if the target is more than 60 ft. away from the caster." to me feels unneeded and makes the spell sound more complicated than it is. This is also something that usually only happens with weapon attacks, so why start now, you're not replicating a weapon. Plus, this spell is basically an upscaled/variant of Ice Knife.
I'd also remove the "The target rolls the saving throw at disadvantage if the snowball struck them." excerpt, it's another thing that if removed can help simplify the spell.
Last point for now, and the most important one. Please do not make you content public until you're sure that you're happy with it and are done editing. It just makes it easier to make edits without having to create a new version each time. (there are other reasons to wait to publish, but trying to keep it simple and quick).
(sorry if some things come across the wrong way or don't make sense, I wrote this pretty haphazardly but do plan to reiterate if needed.)

While I thought that as well, I wasn't truly sure if it was the best idea due to how the damage could possibly scale up to meet similar scaling to a Fireball on upper levels - as directly +2d6 per level made me kind of iffy - but at the same time I didn't want a Flame Strike styled upscaling (deciding for damage type of upscale nor I would know how to do such a thing)
On the other side, having the first strike be a d6 and the AoE be a d4 would simply feel kind of weaker, as the expected damage would decrease in a considerable way.

completely inspired by that spell
I mean, I did want to give it some "effective" range at the same time I still gave the incentive to attack from relatively close, as if you technically could attack at 120 ft., you could do a Fireball for simplicity - but I do agree that it kinds of overcomplicate it.

While it is something that would help simplify the spell, the ability to make them roll the saving throw at disadvantage if struck is something I kind of would like to have around, and still incentivizes attacking from close range due to the reduced effective range from earlier - you want neutral or advantage rolls to ensure that your target is hopefully going to eat most of the blow. I did go way too overcomplicated from the beginning
And I suffered PTSD from waiting for Beyond to update my homebrew spells without posting them and it took ages to update and update, and just sharing, regretting, and then remaking felt kind of faster, being honest.
Though, thanks a lot for the feedback and I may apologize for my possible selfish me trying to rebute anything coming.
This isn't actually a signature, just something I copy and paste onto the bottom of all my posts. Or is it? Yep, it is. Or is it..? I’m a hobbit, and the master cranial imploder of the "Oops, I Accidently Destroyed Someone's Brain" cult. Extended sig. I'm actually in Limbo, it says I'm in Mechanus because that's where I get my WiFi from. Please don't tell the modrons, they're still angry from the 'Spawning Stone' fiasco. No connection to Dragonslayer8 other than knowing them in real life.

And do tell me if something feels wrong, if there is something that should be fixed, or so forth.
Edit - Had to refix description of spell, new version.

Seems interesting.
